I need to set up a laptop with video conf capability. I will need to allow a remote person to access the laptop and somehow signal that they want to start a chat with someone in the room where the laptop is. I was thinking some type of light pole that can be controlled from the computer, click a button and a light comes on. Can be very simple. Any ideas how to go about this?

Does anyone know of an off the shelf solution?

I think this is quite off-topic in this forum.
Still, have a look here: http://blink1.thingm.com/[^]

How about some LEDs or an LCD? This article is quite popular I/O Ports Uncensored - 1 - Controlling LEDs (Light Emiting Diodes) with Parallel Port[^] or the companion I/O Ports Uncensored Part 2 - Controlling LCDs (Liquid Crystal Displays) and VFDs (Vacuum Fluorescent Displays) with Parallel Port[^]

The remote message side of things is covered in this Remote methods and events in C#[^] (might need some tweaking)

Just a note: only few high-end laptops designed for low level developers are equipped with parallel port nowadays.
