how does network mapping software work

Hi all.
I was just curious. I want to know how software like these
http://www.mikrotik.com/thedude[^] and http://www.parseerror.com/lanmap/[^]
work. I want to write my own network mapper but i dont know how the mapping is done.
I just want to be able to map the nodes of the network and nothing else.

nmap is one of best software over linux/windows, it is opensource.
