Sql Server 2008 login

Hi,

First of all I'm new to MSSql. I want to use MSSql 2008 on my system.

I have installed SQLEXPR_x64_ENU and then SQLManagementStudio_x64_ENU

Windows-7, 64 bit.

I'm unable to login using Management Studio (MS). While installing these 2 softwares it nowhere asked these details. Please help.

Solution 1

Select Windows Authentication from Authentication dropdownlist and click Connect. Now you should be connected to the server.
During installation it must have asked you for authentication type for login such as Windows Authentication, which is default and SQL Server Authentication.

I tried it but its not working.. What servername you suggest.

Typically Server name is same as your computer name.
Try finding the server name by cliking on Browse for more.. from Server Name dropdownlist. You should be able to find your server name under Database Engine
Note: If you are using Express version then you may find your server name as appended with "SQLExpress" or something at the end.

No additional softwares required for SSMS(SQL Server Management Studio). Are you able to view the login screen of SSMS?

yes I can. It is opening. As I mentioned in my post I have installed two softwares..

Right. Then, you are saying you are unable to find the server name and other details?
Server Name: Launch the SQL Server Configuration Manager. To do this, go to Start > Programs > Microsoft SQL Server > Configuration Tools.
Locate the running MS SQL Server instance name (see image)
If it doesn't work, try adding your computer name before it. for example : COMPUTER_NAME\SQLExpress
Then select windows authentication and then click login

perfect it work. Can u pls tell what login and pwd I should enter if I want to use it using "Sqlserver Authentication"..

Great !
As of now, your sql authentication will be in disabled mode. You need to enable that and set the password too.
Follow these steps:
1. Login with windows authentication
2. Right click on the server instance in the object explorer (typically placed at LHS of the window)
3. Click on "Properties"
4. It will open Server Properties popup. Select "Security" from the list of pages under "Select a page"
5. Check the radio button "SQL Server and Windows Authentication Mode"
6. Press "OK"
7. Find "Security" folder under the server instance in the Object Explorer window. Expand it.
8. Expand "Logins"
9. Right click on "sa" and click properties
10. Change the password as you want and click OK
11. Now, right click on the server instance in object explorer and click on "restart"
12. Now, you should be able to login with user name "sa" and your password.

I read your comments. I think you should explain it more like how to add credentials for "Sql Server Authentication", like you explained me.. How to find servername..
