I downloaded an OpenVMS version of it last year intending to install it on one of my AlphaServers, but I just haven't yet.

I try to support it as best as I can on non-intranet sites - seems to me to be the best way to make sure your markup is as bullet proof as possible. Just seems like a sensible thing to do to me, even if it's a minority browser.

I wanted to use some HTML5 tools in my web application and found it was only available to Chrome and Safari. I've since changed my windows browser over to Chrome.
Really... business 101. (Firefox and IExplore)

If you have a shop you should be able do receive money in several ways.
If customers shouldn't have impediments if they want to buy something from you, the paying process might be the last thing you want a customer to complain about.
The same applies to browsers.
If you manage to get users to your page, the last thing you want is see them leaving because you don't support their browser.
A rock solid design and cross browser support is a plus point on the trust of the user, even if they're not aware of it. If the page brakes it's a lot of minus point in the customer trust and they are aware of it!
Of course this changes if you're developing for a restricted environment.
If you're sure of which set of browsers will be used then it's OK, otherwise, or in doubt, I prefer to design ground up with broad browser compliance in mind.
Always remember that customer trust is vital for any business, and nowadays (and for a long time already) having a good website plays a big role on this matter.

(but again a bifurcation/disparities between the version (most of the cases minor) may crop up)?

I can say it: "IE 6 is gone", but then again I can always point to todays date. 
Anyway, that is kind of scary. I do play a few games and watch Netflix through our Wii, but I have never heard any of our customers requesting us to support it.

"IE8 or lower" implies IE8 without considering IE7, IE6 etc. So "IE10", "IE9" and "IR8 or lower" covers IE8 + IE9 + IE10 to my mind.

How did you define "lower" ? Browsers <= IE8 or Browsers >= IE8. According to your response it falls out to Browsers >= IE8. Which is wrong for me.
Let me ask you simple qn? What is this suppose to mean.

Shudder, if you can't work out that "IE8 or lower" covers earlier browser versions, remind me never to let you write a conditional statement.

The keyword here is or, which in my mind "allows" me to check that box even if I only support one single browser and that is IE8, IE7 or IE6.
The point I take from this thread is, that there should have been individual checkboxes for IE8, IE7 and IE6, especially when taken the post about Wii into account.
