I developed the project under .NET Framework 4.0, VS 2010. I don't think I had this problem. Probably the hotfix was already in place.

Indeed, my solution did not support generics. Good catch. Can you describe your use case for generic view model? If I remember correctly, it is not (yet) possible to define a generic view in XAML.
