Is going to walk across Antarctica - in the Antarctic winter this time.

-90C? OMG | :OMG: Walking? WTF | :WTF:

Is he mad?

Well, yes, probably - we are talking about a man who attacked his own fingers with a circular saw here - but this does seem a bit bonkers even for him.

So: Would you do it? 'Cause I wouldn't!

BTW: If you haven't read it, his autobigraphy "Mad, Bad and Dangerous to Know"[^] is well worth a read - the first half, anyway. The second gets a bit dull and "list of trips" ish.

Yup. In the best way possible. There isn't enough kudos in the world for him.

I think he has a psychological condition.

His particular psychosis is a kind of Thanataphobia.

I think the man is morbidly afraid of having a normal, boring death.

He has lived his life fully on the edge, and the thought of dying peaceably in his sleep surrounded by family and friends after a short illness frightens him.
For him, his death should be like his life, at the boundary of madness and in a manner that will be remembered.

Amundsen said, on hearing that Scott had died, "I have lost Antarctica", for he knew that people would always remember Scott for dying and not Amundsen for getting there first.

Dr Sir Ranulph Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes,Baronet,OBE,PMdl (2 clasps), to give him his full name and titles, needs an extraordinary death.
Died Crossing the Antarctic Naked With a Banjo, or Poisoned by Tropical Snake whilst Stilt Walking across the Amazon Rainforest.
Something like that.

However, mad as he is, I admire him and think that he shows what a man can do if he sets his mind to it.

Oh I agree - he is a remarkable man, and to be admired.

Mad as a box of frogs, but a remarkable man.

I admire him even if just for doing seven marathons on seven continents in seven days, four months after having a double heart bypass OMG | :OMG:

If Jeremey Clarkson could drive a Ford to the North Pole then why not?

He didn't.

He did, however, drive a Toyota Hilux to the North Pole.

I don't know. May be he is (over)confident that he can pull this through. If he has a family and friends who really care about him, then he is inconsiderate.

As much as I would like to visit Antarctica with a group of professionals with all possibly required amenities to survive, I will never walk across it.
