Admittedly, my base level of being is bad tempered but I am oft inspired to be only mildly miffed. If there weren't so many numpties in the world, I would be much happier.

So here we are, finally, on US election day.

All to be decided not by a majority (far too democratic), but by a complex college system where the votes of the individual are meaningless.

And to top it the party symbols are an Ass and an Elephant.

Sums it all up really.

Another day, yet another thread that goes against Chris' wishes that politics and religion shouldn't be discussed in the Lounge. I'm pretty sure that this should go into the Soapbox.

Not really the politics, just the symbolism used.

It is like Apple.
They use a Poisoned Apple as the company logo.

This logo is pretty bad too[^]

This one is unfortunate, but funny[^]

I don't know how far the news have spread outside the Nordic countries:

A Danish publishing house was marketing an E-book through the Apple store, a historical walkthrough of the hippie movement of the 1960-70s, illustrated with lot of photos. This is Denmark, which means that pictures showing certain body parts were not necessarily (if at all) censored by the publishing house.

Once Apple discovered this, they censored if, of course. Distribution of the book was stopped immediately.

So the publishing house submitted a revised edition to the Apple store: Every t*t, every a*s, every c**k and c**t, was hidden behind bright red apples...

After four days, the Apple store finally understood that their censorship was being ridiculed, and they stopped distribution even of the book with the apple censorship applied...

The pictures are shown in both censored and uncensored versions on hippienu.dk/node/345 - maybeis not available to readers everywhere due to censorship. Warning: Some readers may not want to see these pictures, even if they are available from a technical viewpoint. The collection does contain the uncensore versions, too! Be careful, if you are of the sensitive kind!

(All this banning and censoring and new banning took place last week.)

... as opposed to the British system where we do not actually endorse the PM at all.

If he is the leader of the party with most seats then, yes we have endorsed him.
One of these days I'm going to think of a really clever signature.

GeneralRe: Symbolismmemberviaducting5 Nov '12 - 23:35
When it's quite possible, if not usual, for the party with well over half the seats to have well under half of the votes, no we haven't endorsed them.
GeneralRe: SymbolismmemberBergholt Stuttley Johnson5 Nov '12 - 23:43
depends on how well you draw the boundaries when you are in power

But that's the way our voting system works, so I still say we have endorsed them.
One of these days I'm going to think of a really clever signature.

GeneralRe: SymbolismmemberBergholt Stuttley Johnson6 Nov '12 - 0:17
the idea is that the community votes for a person to represent that community, the fact that not every comunity has equal number of voters is always going to be an issue as populations move about.

parties are not voted for in UK elections, individuals are, those indiviuals group together to form a govenment and apoint a prime minister (that they tend to be members of parties is just they way of things but it is not a requirement)

we could have a Prime minister who is an indpendant, not belonging to any party or we could have a govenment that consists of a group of mp's from all paries (both very unlikely but possible)
You cant outrun the world, but there is no harm in getting a head start

GeneralRe: Symbolismmemberviaducting6 Nov '12 - 0:23
The way our voting system works is unfair, so it doesn't necessarily count as an endorsement.
GeneralRe: SymbolismmvpRichard MacCutchan6 Nov '12 - 1:49
Interesting then, that when we were given an opportunity to select a "fairer" system, the majority were not in favour.
One of these days I'm going to think of a really clever signature.

GeneralRe: SymbolismmemberMycroft Holmes5 Nov '12 - 22:27
I don't give a rats about the US political system but what makes you think there is a correct method of deciding a leader - anywhere. They are all corrupt or manipulated to suit the local power blocks.

I think a benevolent dictatorship would be the best, give it to some poor bastard who does not want it!
Never underestimate the power of human stupidity

GeneralRe: SymbolismmemberDalek Dave5 Nov '12 - 22:29
There is a correct method.

You take all politicians who want to be leader and put them in the arena.
A fight to the death ensues.

Last man standing is executed and someone from the crowd is picked at random.
