I have to have in sight permanently tasks due. A secondary list with a filtering criterion itself is something very useful, I think. At least for me it is.
This would be useful, but Dan has in the past indicated there are challenges with creating different filters for different views.
A work-around I have used in the past is to paste the 'due today' (or so) tasks into a stickie, which can be positioned on screen where convenient, and always be on top. This doesn't of course allow the direct completion of task items in TDL, hence some double handling.
Dan has implemented some integration with an open source stickies application by Zhorn software for showing reminders, so this might be an option.
Another way I have worked, is to copy the larger tasks for today into a diary. This has the added benefit of being able to schedule them through the day. Was also useful approach at the time, as I was at my computer less than I am currently.

Have a look at the preferences > fonts and colours.
Is "colour task titles by assigned colours" enabled?

Thx Manoj.
You only see the 'Set Task Color' menu item if you have 'Preferences > User Interface > Fonts and Colours > Colour task titles by assigned colours' enabled.

I recently had a request for making tasks readonly[^], which would appear to be a fairly simple job (6.8).
And it's prompted in me another related idea: Task Ownership.
I haven't really thought it through yet, but if a task was 'owned' by someone then only they could edit it.
Effectively it would be read-only to everyone but the owner.
Let me know if this would be of interest to you.
ps. This would not be a mechanism to allow you to only check-out specific tasks, it would just be a way of controlling access to tasks.
modified yesterday.

Interesting. Are you thinking this would be driven by the "Allocated to" attribute?
