This competition covers only the Intel AppUp store. If you wish to enter
an app in the Windows store that's up to you, but there is no submission prize for getting
an app in the Windows Store.

What is the Challenge?
To get your Ultrabook enabled Windows 8 application into the Intel AppUp online store
by December 1, 2012.
- The first 50 successful AppUp store submissions will receive a $1,000 prize
for getting their app in the AppUp store
- All round 2 entrants are in the running for 1 of seven $10,000
cash prizes
- The final winner gets the $20,000 grand prize
- Every single entrant also goes in the fast lane for the app approval
process.
That's a total prize package for the big winner of $31,000, plus additional promotion
and visibility for you and your app, plus you are sent an Ultrabook!
Please be aware that it can take over a week from the time you submit
your application to the time it appears on the AppUp store, hence the submission
deadline of November 21.
What is the reward?

There are six $10,000 prizes for Windows Desktop
apps, and only one $10,000 prize for Windows Store apps.

There are 50 $1,000 prizes for the first 50 apps accepted into the AppUp
store. Only Windows Desktop apps are accepted into the AppUp store
- All apps that are created for this contest are eligible to be

What sort of applications are acceptable?
Almost anything. This is an Ultrabook competition so you need to ensure your
application takes advantage of the new Ultrabook capabilities. If it's a Windows
application then it will work, obviously, and if you accept cursor input then the
touchscreen input will work out of the box, too. But we want more:
- Make your app touch aware, not just touch enabled
- or maybe integrate location data
- or include smart connect support – have your apps respond to messages when
the Ultrabook is sleeping
- or maybe just go crazy with the sensors – tilt it, shake it, lift it or
spin your Ultrabook around and have your app know what's going on. Great for
game developers or those who just want to make a fun widget.
The more you show off what an Ultrabook can do, the more you demonstrate that
an Ultrabook isn't your Dad's old, tired PC, the better your chances. Make your
existing app engaging on an ultra-light, ultra-portable Ultrabook.

Judging will be divided into 7 categories, with each category winner being awarded
a $10,000 prize.

How do I enter?
First,
Register!
If you don't register you will not be eligible
for the competition.
Second, complete your Windows 8 application, ensuring it showcases the
Ultrabook, and submit it to the Intel AppUp store.
Round 2 submission window: November 1 - November 21, 2012 only. Please read
the FAQ for important submission information.
Round 2 contestants will need to be completed and tested using the Ultrabook
that they received from Round 1 in order to ensure the application works perfectly on the hardware,
and then contestants must submit their final application to Intel AppUp for verification
and publishing. Contestants must provide proof of acceptance to be eligible to earn
a Category Prize, an Application Success Award, and/or the Grand Prize by emailing
us at contest@codeproject.com.

Submitting Your App to the Intel® AppUp℠
App Innovation Contest
If you don't submit your app to the AppUp store in time, and/or
it's not approved, you won't be eligible for final judging. Check the submission
requirements and give yourself plenty of time to get it in. We're working with Intel
to have your apps go through the fast lane, but we can't offer miracles for late
entries. The deadline for round 2 entries is November 21,
2012
What if I missed the Round 1 deadline?
Contestants who do not receive an Ultrabook in Round 1, or who do not meet the
Round 1 deadline, are still encouraged to develop applications, write an article
describing their application (make sure it's posted in AppInnovation subsection
of the Ultrabooks section) and then, should they be accepted, submit them to Intel AppUp
store. Round 2 Contestants will be eligible to receive
an Application Success Award on providing proof that (i) they have submitted their
application to Intel AppUp and that (ii) it has been accepted to be included in
the AppUp store.

Can anyone enter?
As with any competition of this nature there are some restrictions. Employees
at Intel, Microsoft, and CodeProject cannot enter, and laws in certain jurisdictions
also restrict entrants. Please see the
Terms
and Conditions for a full list. Specifically, since a major component of this
competition revolves around entrants receiving an Ultrabook, we've had to restrict
entrants to the following countries: United States, Canada, India, Spain, Ireland,
United Kingdom, Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, Denmark, Norway or Sweden. Yes, it
sucks we can't open it to everyone because of various laws in different countries,
but we had to make a call on whether it's better to offer it to a lot, but not all,
of you, or none at all.
No, you don't need to provide a full article because we understand that (a) you
may not have your code and article complete, and (b) you may be entering a commercial
application that contains proprietary information. However, please note that at
the conclusion of the competition those entries that do not fulfill the
submission guidelines
will be removed.
However, we love code. The more code you post in your article - snipets, tips,
classes, or even full code - the better. Your priority in this competition is to
get an app in the AppUp store, but if you can post a full article as well, then
perfect.
Contestants chosen as Round 1 winners will be provided with a URL that allows
them to get a certificate for free, compliments of Intel. You can use the
certificates for anything you want.
Please note: There is currently an
issue with the redirection from the Intel pages.
ArchieCoder writes "When I was redirected from the Intel AppUp website to
the Comodo form page, I was getting these 3 errors: Member not found, Unable to
get property ‘Count’ of undefined or null reference, Unable to get property ‘ItemByName’
of undefined or null reference." ArchieCoder contines that he "put an "s" after
http (so https://...) and it worked".
There should be a skip option at the bottom of the screen where it asks for the product key.

Can you also ask details about how he got that exactly, what was the criteria? Cause if what you said is true then this is really annoying on Intel's part.
I am for certain that none of the others I meet there and am still in touch with have received the UBs we were promised at that event.

I`m having trouble getting precise location data from the UB when using the location API`s.
It looks like I only is getting wifi based locations which are of course not very precise. I get 155 meters accuracy from my home location.
Also the update interval from the location api seems to be a little indeterminate. Looks like location is updated every 50 seconds or so.
Does the builtin GPS sensor Work???
I have been on the Intel website to get driver updates, but this has not given anything. Is there somewhere I need to activate the GPS?
If this is the result that I can expect from the UB, then I`m in trouble with my contest entry, as this is based on expectations of much more precise and more frequent update of GPS based location data.
I get the same result if I use the provided Intel demo and also the MS sample program!
I have also tried the Win7 api class "GeoCoordinateWatcher", which gives the same result.
Anyone have a clue?
PS: I have tried to tune the location class parameters, but nothing changes:
geolocator = new Geolocator();
geolocator.ReportInterval = 10000;
geolocator.MovementThreshold = 0.0;
geolocator.DesiredAccuracy = PositionAccuracy.High;

I took mine for a drive. The best I was able to get was 100m accuracy outdoors. It is raining here.
Here in my office I get 1000m unless I put it in the window.
It seems like it's just not particularly sensitive, but I look forward to hearing other reports.

I have a similar problem like you guys. The GPS gives me Lat and Long with an accuracy of 95000.
I leave in Bangalore India and it gives me a position of Mumbai India. I was thinking I'm only the person who is facing issue with GPS sensors but it looks like every one has an issue.
BTW I'm using USB 3G Modem. Any help would be appreciated.

That is not GPS - that is wifi location data!
The papers that came with the Intel Ultrabook states that the PC has a Fastrax GPS module and that should give positions pretty fast.
Getting positiondata with a GPS module does not require a wifi connection!
To me it seems that the GPS module is either missing a driver to work with the Windows 8 location mechanism or another kind of firmware issue...

Oh is it.. Even i had problem with that.. When i disconnect my internet I won't get any reading from GPS
All of the other sensors are working perfectly except GPS. Not sure whether i have to update driver , will give a try

I figured out that GeoLocation() class of WinRT is using a High level Algorithm to fetch the GPS data from Internet connection, Wifi data and "GPS Sensor". I have worked with real GPS sensors at every level. It basically catches signal from 17 Geo Sats and gives "precise" position. And precise means within 10m accuracy. But here Geolocation does not give any data when Internet connection is withdrawn. So it is a simple case of GetLocationFromIP() which is inaccurate and absolutely not acceptable data. I have already finished and finalized my app, but this tests frustrated me. Now I am planning to mask the GeoTagging part from front end and update data with dummy locations.
Somebody from Intel must clarify if the devices sent to us does have a physical GPS that gets from 17 Geo Stationary Sats or is it a "Fun Location".
No point telling a driver that he has a hotel in 200 mtr when he is actually heading towards narrow river bridge 200 m ahead. Let us hear from Intel guys.

You're right right -- either
- it doesn't have GPS
- it doesn't have a Location Services GPS driver
- it doesn't have an antenna
Accuracy
I think:
- Accuracy == 1000m == code for reverse IP geolocation
- Accuracy == 100m == code for WiFi Geolocation (makes sense, 802.11x is spec'd at 100m)
- Accuracy < 100m == GPS Geolocation
Whereas I was able to get a reading with Accuracy == 100, when I turned WiFi off, it changed to no reading at all, which makes sense since it has no IP address and no WiFi signals to triangulate.
Interesting
- It also does not expose the GPS as a virtual COM port, like my Microsoft GPS-500 does.
- When I plug in my USB GPS, Location Services does not make use of it

I have just submitted a cry for help on the Intel developer community.
Maybe there is someone there WHO knows about the GPS and why it´s not functional.
Anyone who has success with getting REAL GPS data?

Can you please try outside of the building to see if the precision is better / and or the the GPS provides the latitude and longitude results if the wifi is turned off.
If the wifi is turned off can you please check if the precision results changes?
If the Latitude and Longitude are giving as 0, and if the Wifi is turned off, can you please try to update the drivers once you register to the premium support.
Please register to the Intel premier Support to get updated drivers and you can contact for Support if you got any issues with the SDP.

Thanks for your suggestions. I have already testet outside, and I only get positions if wifi is active. Without wifi I only receive (latitude, longitude) = 0,0.
I have had it running outside without wifi connection for more than 45 minutes. Still only zeroes.
I will try to see if the Intel premier support gives anything...
I'l get back here when I have done that.

Thanks Peter. if you are seeing the latitude and longitude 0 when the wifi is turned off,
once you download the zip file after registering to premier support, you will have a readme doc. I suggest you please do the step 7 that is to re-install couple of drivers,and restart the machine.

Just to confirm that I have seen this issue for some time and was told to move to Win8 RTM with latest drivers. I have and the issue still persists.
I have never seen real GPS data, never seen speed or altitude. Typical update rate is about 50-60 seconds.

It's not easy this one...
I have today got access to the Intel Premier support site and downloaded all available material (PUB_RD_005.zip, 94.2_1248.zip and G76472-002_UBIV4SRDQ_924689_PV_Qual2_PUBRD_Final.pdf).
Unfortunately there is no (= I can not find) any "readme.doc" file. The PUB_RD_005 file contains a "Install_Drivers.htm" file, but I can't identify any "step 7" as you suggest.
Can you be a little more specific on what I need to look for?
What is in the downloaded files is basically the drivers as was also provided on the memorystick (although a little newer than what is installed on my machine) and bios update with some encryption stuff.
More help needed.

Hi,
Today morning I figured it out in working with GPS. I have succeeded in getting the GPS data with the existing driver that came along with Ultrabook.
I had a similar problem of getting the GPS data accurately , If you read my previous comments you will come to know that i was getting a reading with an accuracy of 95,000 Meters. Even i was completely worried. Today while coming in my office cab , on the way i just tested the GPS sensor and surprisingly i got a reading with 100mts accuracy with the build in GPS and also without net connection.
For what i understood is the GPS sensor gives the accurate reading only in some specific location. I'm not sure if we have to update driver however I'm happy that I was able to read the GPS data with 100mts accuracy.

Hi Peter,
Have you had any joy or found any updates on the situation? I still cannot get the altitude or speed to report ever.
I even downloaded the latest drivers available from intel, but they didn't make any difference. I also installed the Windows Driver Kit to get the Sensor Diagnostic tool, and it reports the satellite numbers and see them changing, but doesn't report the long/lat/speed/alt etc.
I even tried disabling the wifi (switch to airplane mode) so that it was only the GPS available, but still not joy.
Tad frustrating!

No joy, no fun! At least not regarding the GPS.
The UB itself is a nice machine 
After agreement with Intel Premier Support I have returned my UB and are now awaiting a replacement device. Unfortunately it will not arrive until Friday (16th).
I hope that will fix my missing GPS data.
Until now I have not read here on the forum that anyone has gotten real GPS data working smoothly, what I see is only someone getting a position with an accuracy around 100 meters and wifi turned on. That is NOT GPS data!!
