The Windows 8* & Ultrabook™ App Innovation Contest

Quick FAQ

Can I enter a Windows Store app in the Windows AppStore?

This competition covers only the Intel AppUp store. If you wish to enter an app in the Windows store that's up to you, but there is no submission prize for getting an app in the Windows Store.

Do I have to provide source code?

No, but please see this note.

What sort of apps are you after?

Innovative, interesting apps that provide a new experience. An Ultrabook is more than a laptop. The more your app shows off this, the better your chances of winning.

What is the Challenge?

To get your Ultrabook enabled Windows 8 application into the Intel AppUp online store by December 1, 2012.

  • The first 50 successful AppUp store submissions will receive a $1,000 prize for getting their app in the AppUp store
  • All round 2 entrants are in the running for 1 of seven $10,000 cash prizes
  • The final winner gets the $20,000 grand prize
  • Every single entrant also goes in the fast lane for the app approval process.

That's a total prize package for the big winner of $31,000, plus additional promotion and visibility for you and your app, plus you are sent an Ultrabook!

Please be aware that it can take over a week from the time you submit your application to the time it appears on the AppUp store, hence the submission deadline of November 21.

What is the reward?

  • There are six  $10,000 prizes for Windows Desktop apps, and only one $10,000 prize for Windows Store apps.
  • There are 50 $1,000 prizes for the first 50 apps accepted into the AppUp store. Only Windows Desktop apps are accepted into the AppUp store
  • All apps that are created for this contest are eligible to be listed on the Microsoft Windows Store. Windows 8 Desktop apps must be first posted on the Intel AppUp Center to be eligible. More information on submitting to the Windows Store

What sort of applications are acceptable?

Almost anything. This is an Ultrabook competition so you need to ensure your application takes advantage of the new Ultrabook capabilities. If it's a Windows application then it will work, obviously, and if you accept cursor input then the touchscreen input will work out of the box, too. But we want more:

  • Make your app touch aware, not just touch enabled
  • or maybe integrate location data
  • or include smart connect support – have your apps respond to messages when the Ultrabook is sleeping
  • or maybe just go crazy with the sensors – tilt it, shake it, lift it or spin your Ultrabook around and have your app know what's going on. Great for game developers or those who just want to make a fun widget.

The more you show off what an Ultrabook can do, the more you demonstrate that an Ultrabook isn't your Dad's old, tired PC, the better your chances. Make your existing app engaging on an ultra-light, ultra-portable Ultrabook.

Read the Ultrabook Overview for Software Developers for more info on what an Ultrabook running Windows 8 can do.

Judging will be divided into 7 categories, with each category winner being awarded a $10,000 prize.

Windows 8 ("desktop") apps

  • Gaming
  • Entertainment
  • Productivity
  • Retail
  • Healthcare
  • Education

Windows 8 Store ("metro") apps

  • Total Innovation (i.e. show off what an Ultrabook can do no matter what category)

How do I enter?

First, Register! If you don't register you will not be eligible for the competition.

Second, complete your Windows 8 application, ensuring it showcases the Ultrabook, and submit it to the Intel AppUp store.

Round 2 submission window: November 1 - November 21, 2012 only. Please read the FAQ for important submission information.

Round 2 contestants will need to be completed and tested using the Ultrabook that they received from Round 1 in order to ensure the application works perfectly on the hardware, and then contestants must submit their final application to Intel AppUp for verification and publishing. Contestants must provide proof of acceptance to be eligible to earn a Category Prize, an Application Success Award, and/or the Grand Prize by emailing us at contest@codeproject.com

All Round 2 contestants should read the App Innovation Contest FAQ - App Submission & Verification and watch the short video Submitting Your App to the Intel® AppUp℠ App Innovation Contest

If you don't submit your app to the AppUp store in time, and/or it's not approved, you won't be eligible for final judging. Check the submission requirements and give yourself plenty of time to get it in. We're working with Intel to have your apps go through the fast lane, but we can't offer miracles for late entries. The deadline for round 2 entries is November 21, 2012

FAQ

What if I missed the Round 1 deadline?

Contestants who do not receive an Ultrabook in Round 1, or who do not meet the Round 1 deadline, are still encouraged to develop applications, write an article describing their application (make sure it's posted in AppInnovation subsection of the Ultrabooks section) and then, should they be accepted, submit them to Intel AppUp store. Round 2 Contestants will be eligible to receive an Application Success Award on providing proof that (i) they have submitted their application to Intel AppUp and that (ii) it has been accepted to be included in the AppUp store.

Can you throw me some links on getting started?

Sure

Can anyone enter?

As with any competition of this nature there are some restrictions. Employees at Intel, Microsoft, and CodeProject cannot enter, and laws in certain jurisdictions also restrict entrants. Please see the Terms and Conditions for a full list. Specifically, since a major component of this competition revolves around entrants receiving an Ultrabook, we've had to restrict entrants to the following countries: United States, Canada, India, Spain, Ireland, United Kingdom, Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, Denmark, Norway or Sweden. Yes, it sucks we can't open it to everyone because of various laws in different countries, but we had to make a call on whether it's better to offer it to a lot, but not all, of you, or none at all.

Do I have to write a full article with source code?

No, you don't need to provide a full article because we understand that (a) you may not have your code and article complete, and (b) you may be entering a commercial application that contains proprietary information. However, please note that at the conclusion of the competition those entries that do not fulfill the submission guidelines will be removed.

However, we love code. The more code you post in your article - snipets, tips, classes, or even full code - the better. Your priority in this competition is to get an app in the AppUp store, but if you can post a full article as well, then perfect.

How do I get a code signing certificate for my AppUp store entry?

Contestants chosen as Round 1 winners will be provided with a URL that allows them to get a certificate for free, compliments of Intel. You can use the certificates for anything you want.

Please note: There is currently an issue with the redirection from the Intel pages. ArchieCoder writes "When I was redirected from the Intel AppUp website to the Comodo form page, I was getting these 3 errors: Member not found, Unable to get property ‘Count’ of undefined or null reference, Unable to get property ‘ItemByName’ of undefined or null reference." ArchieCoder contines that he "put an "s" after http (so https://...) and it worked".

I received an Ultrabook and it's asking me for a Win8 key. Help?

There should be a skip option at the bottom of the screen where it asks for the product key.

AdminPrize Cheques - PayPal is now an optionadminChris Maunder14 Jan '13 - 10:11
For those who have not received cheques, or for whom cashing a cheque, or getting a cheque cleared is insane ($150 in some cases, 6 months in others) we can now do PayPal transfers. This will involve us cancelling the cheque that was sent, waiting confirmation, then issuing the new payment.

There is a cost in this that we will cover, but it's a cost nonetheless so please only ask for this option as a last resort.
cheers,
Chris Maunder

Although we didn't win the contest we got our App well positioned in the AppUp store (currently no. 7 on Top Free Apps).
Just wanted to thank Code Project and Chris for driving this opportunity and for the Ultrabook which is still in use for this App.

GeneralCan't seem to get Ultrabook support - anyone had any success in contacting Intel?memberAdam David Hill20 Jan '13 - 0:53
Hi, all.

My touchscreen no longer responds to touch input since re-installing Windows with my own copy. Sorry for posting this here when this is really an Intel issue, but I've been trying to contact Intel in various ways to get support and had no success whatsoever.

See here.

Do we have an official point of contact, given that Intel Premier Support does not actually support the Ultrabook?

I also install a new clean copy of windows today, and my touch screen is working fine, even just after installing windows Touchscreen is working (i.e No driver is installed by me). So no issue due to installation. Do two things.
First check for any issue with driver in device manger, and solve it if any.
Secondly download and install the "sensor panel" app from Intel's App up center. it will display data from all sensors including touch screen. Click on touch screen panel on top left side of the app. Then it will expand it to full screen, then touch any where if your touch screen is working it will show the co-ordinates of touch point on top-right side of screen.
Hope your touch screen is working.
If it shows the co-ordinate your touchscreen is fine.
Let me know about results.

Hi Verma,

Thanks for your message. Unfortunately the device isn't appearing at all, so there's no signal from touch input at all. I think it's something to do with the "Pen & Input" section in the control panel not being present, which I'm guessing it should be.

May I ask...

- What version of Windows 8 are you using? (RTM, RC, Pro, etc.)
- In the device manager, whereabouts (which category) does the Ultrabook touchscreen appear and what's it called?
- Do you have the "Pen & Input" section in the control panel?

Thanks for your help - much appreciated.

1.) I've win 8 pro edition. ( that I've downloaded from the MSDN site, Yes I've the MSDN sub.)
2.) It is named HID
3.) Yes I have.
One thing more I come to know is that in OEM editions of win 8, the touchscreens that not have Microsoft certificate, will not work in windows 8 OEM.

Ah, I think you've got it spot on there - mine is the OEM edition. I've just put the trial copy on again and it's working. On my full copy it doesn't.

Just try one more thing. I'm not 100% sure that this will work. I'm 90% sure that this can be done, without effecting working of Touch screen.
1.) press windows key+w, and type activation. It will show "windows activation".
2.) open   it.
3.) Click "add features to your edition". It will open new window.
4.) click on I already have a product key.
5.) Then add the key of your purchased copy there.

Your trial copy will now we a full copy, working with touchscreen. Let me now about results.
Good Luck

Unfortunately I already tried that. I says that the key does not work, even though it's one I bought. When I installed it from the disk it did work. I believe keys are tied to specific versions of the OS.

Thanks again.

I think you have trial copy of windows 8 enterprise edition. My assumption was that you have installed the pro edition. If it was an pro then this will defiantly work.
GeneralRe: Can't seem to get Ultrabook support - anyone had any success in contacting Intel?memberAdam David Hill27 Jan '13 - 22:54
My key is for Pro 64 OEM. Whatever edition was installed on the Ultrabooks when we received them did not accept the key. Not sure what edition the trial was for, I'll try it on that one when I get home tonight in case it's different.

I now have access to an MSDN subscription. I can confirm that the regular "Windows 8" (UK English) version works fine with the Intel Ivy Bridge Ultrabook touchscreen.

For anyone else's reference the version that does not work is:

Microsoft Windows 8 Pro 64 Bit DVD - OEM

Thanks again to Verma for the responses.

Essentially I'm a lucky one, now having access to MSDN. For the other devs who received an Ultrabook and have the 90 day trial this still leaves a nasty shock when they try and put their purchased copies of Windows 8 on the machine. I can only recommend Windows 7, which obviously isn't touch-optimised UI-wise, but at least works.

GeneralRe: Can't seem to get Ultrabook support - anyone had any success in contacting Intel?memberVerma.No.128 Jan '13 - 15:28
I say the best way is to buy new win8 pro online, don't go for dvd just the online resource. And when you got the key, activate your 90 days trial with that only. It will work and you have a full edition of win8 pro. Thrust me, in-fact I also do same when mine UB ask for the key.
If you install your purchased win8 pro on UB then touch screen will not work as it is a MSFT certified touchscreen and will not work on OEM edition. (Mostly purchased copies are OEM editions.)

Thanks

I read somewhere that some touch screens work with pre-release and MSDN versions of Win 8 and not the public Pro version. I'm currently installing Win 7 and the touchscreen has sprung to life, which would seem to support this.

I'll let people know how I get on diagnosing this in case it helps anyone else. At least it's not a hardware fault. Worst case scenario I'll have a Win 7 Ultrabook. Smile | :)

I installed Windows 7 on my Ultrabook today. The only real problem I had, was getting the WiFi to work. The provided WiFi drivers are for Windows 8 only. I had to install the Intel® PROSet/Wireless driver to get it to work.

The Device Manager still shows a few unresolved issues. I haven't tried out the sensors and iSCT & iRST yet. But the laptop is definitely usable.

I hope this helps someone. Thanks to Adam Hill for the suggestion.

I'm going to try dual-booting with Fedora. If someone has tried this, I would appreciate a short note describing the experience.
