HOW TO CREATE ASP.NET MASTER PAGE

hello. i am quite new to asp.net and i decided to create a web application but i cant even create a master page. i have done my research but the information is not enough. i still do not know how to create a working master page. i am using visual studio 2010. i end up at this point file-new-website-masterpage. whats next?? a sample master page would help or a detailed exlanation.
