Creating an iPhone-styled Windows Phone emulator

I read this great post by Jeff Wilcox yesterday. Jeff has changed his Windows Phone emulator default theme, making it identical to a Samsung WP device. He describes the process of changing the default look-and-feel of the emulator and also provides the .png and .psd files he used.

Reading that post, I came up with a crazy idea: why not create an iPhone-styled Windows Phone emulator? Pretty cool, huh? So, here's the result:

iPhone-styled Windows Phone emulator

Downloads

The unzipped folder contains the following elements:

  • Licence.txt
  • WM7_Skin.xml
  • WM7_Skin_Down.png
  • WM7_Skin_Mask.png
  • WM7_Skin_Up.png
  • WPiPhone.psd

How to Install

Changing the emulator's default theme is quite easy:

  • Unzip the folder you downloaded.
  • Navigate to C:\Program Files\Microsoft XDE\1.0 (or C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft XDE\1.0).
  • Replace WM7_Skin.xml, WM7_Skin_Down.png, WM7_Skin_Mask.png, and WM7_Skin_Up.png with the ones I provide you. You'd better keep the original files in another place.

Credits

WM7_Skin.xml and WM7_Skin_Mask.png are the exact same files from Jeff's blog post. The iPhone GUI is taken from teehan+lax blog. Enjoy!

Attention: This iPhone theme for the Windows Phone emulator is unofficial. Only home use is permitted. You cannot display the "hacked" emulator in public. Please remove the Windows logo if you have no legal rights to use it.
