The Weird and The Wonderful

The Weird and The Wonderful forum is a place to post Coding Horrors, Worst Practices, and the occasional flash of brilliance.

We all come across code that simply boggles the mind. Lazy kludges, embarrassing mistakes, horrid workarounds and developers just not quite getting it. And then somedays we come across - or write - the truly sublime.

Post your Best, your worst, and your most interesting. But please - no programming questions . This forum is purely for amusement and discussions on code snippets. All actual programming questions will be removed.

No, I did not ignore your irrelevant point.

Your comments are only relevent if the character set changes - and thus the protocol changed.

Thus your comment, in terms of the original question, is irrelevant.

And I seriously doubt it would ever be relevant because it presumes that the protocol is compiler dependent. Even if the protocol did specially use a multi-byte character set which varied by OS then then the correct thing for the protocol to do is send a precursor to determine the ordering. Your code presumes and ordering and ignores the possibility that the other end is running on a different OS.
