For me as an NRI, its going to be a night mare. Right now I don't have the Aadhaar, But when I visit India for 3 weeks, I have to close some insurance and mutual funds etc.
I talked with them and said it would be very difficult to process without the card. Passport or Ration card wont suffice.
Too much of good is bad,mix some evil in it
I got my Aadhar card made recently (few months ago). I think the do give you your aadhaar number and a downloadable pic online within a week.
Not sure if you insurance stuff can be done with just the aadhaar number, but I'd heard you can download and print out the online 'card' as well.
I guess the 3-weeks might be just for shipping.
I'd second what Nishant suggested, if you need you aadhaar to get you work done, it's probably best to apply as soon as you come and try using the number / online card.

You could have applied for the same during your visit and then can download the copy online. Its true that since they made this mandatory for almost everything it would be tough for them who don't have this. I think they are planning to make it required for even railway reservations.
Too much helpful. In very simple words, it's connecting everything. e.g. Reliance Jio activated all their sim cards just by thumbprints. No documentation at all.
In past, too many documents were required to register for something e.g. light bill as address proof, voter id as identity proof etc. Now all these are covered by just one document. If i'm not wrong , Govt. is about to ban other docs such as pan card, voter id to be valid as identity proof while registering for any service.
You can consider Adhaar number as SSN if all goes well. The only problem with this project is,data security. Data breach is a major concern.
Programming today is a race between software engineers striving to build bigger and better idiot-proof programs, and the Universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots. So far, the Universe is winning
Still, quite hypocritical. These guys are so thick skinned - blindly opposing something when it's the other party's idea, and then doing exactly the same. Even those that support a Hindu-aligned-party have to surely admit that the leader is nothing special, he's just another politician, in every sense of the word.
It is definitely a good initiative and the good thing is they have made arrangements to get them easily as well. I also get one for me last year. They process was simple to get that although I didn't get the hard copy but was able to download the same online.
