Hi All,
Currently I am working on deployment of our application on Windows Vista based PC. The installer supplied by us is supposed to install a OPenSSH sever on the target machine and start it so that it is available for all users of the system. Till Windows XP it was fine but with Vista things have changed. The service is not getting started on Vista PC. I have tried various methods to make it work but none of them worked. Please if someone has an idea what could be the issue do let me know.
For you information I am using Installshield Professional 12.X for makining our installer. The following are the methods I have tried till now
1. Raising the elevation level of the installer exe (marked it as requireAdministrator)
2. Raising the elevation level of actual serivce (marked it as requireAdministrator)
For the above two I have embedded the modified manifest file. The one generated by the Installshield has privelege level set as "highest available"
If I am a member of admin group and I execute an installer exe which has embedded manifest containing requested privelege as "require administrator" then Vista UAC does not prompt me for elevation this means that the setup program is running with full admin priveleges. So any process started by it should also be running with admin priveleges, right?
Now once the installation is done and the setup ask to reboot the machine so as soon as the process exits I am back to standard user. So the next time I log into the machine I will be a standard user, however the service requires AdminPriveleges hence it did not started.
So how do I make my installer to install the service properly so the next time I or any user logs into the machine the service is in started state?
Does anyone is aware of some tool that shows me what is the difference when executing the application/service in WinXP Compatible mode. If I run my SSH server in WinXP compatible it does gets started and is available for all the users.
Can someone please let me know where I am going wrong? I do not want to do various group policity settings or run an application in compatibility mode.
Thanks and Regards

This:
1. Raising the elevation level of the installer exe (marked it as requireAdministrator)
2. Raising the elevation level of actual serivce (marked it as requireAdministrator)
Is going to piss off Vista in a big way. You need to make your service run in user mode. We need to get out of the habit of thinking that our programs need to run on an admin or system account. I was fairly impressed by this take on the issue:
http://www.interact-sw.co.uk/iangblog/2007/05/09/uacproblem[^]
With a service, maybe this doesn't have as much weight, but it's something to think about. I've completely changed my company's software because of this. Our software was pissing off Vista in a big way, but some small changes made it so the installer runs with no UAC warnings, and the program runs and self-updates with only one prompt to the user - "do you want to update now or later" - no annoying UAC pop-ups happen. I am using an MSI installer and a Clickonce installer. The users have the choice of choosing either download, whichever one works better for them, and after the first install, it updates itself.

There is no such option. My laptop has fn-key combos that mute and turn the system volume up and down, plus it has a wheel that I think is just a straight-up dimmer pot on the speaker circuits. I also have little buttons on the side that control pause and play, and skipping forward and back, but I've never actually touched them so I'm not sure what they do
I think you can get 3rd part plug-ins that will let you do this, but I don't know the name of any. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

I need to write a debugger which will execute an process and I need to get notification when that process will write or modify any thing on the hard disk. Can we keep watch on any process for getting info when that process will write to hard disk? I have read something about "Win32 Debug API". Can any one guide me or give me any demo code for this?

Why do you post this question in so many forums? Isn't one enough?
And why write it yourself? There are good programs for this already.

I am listening to the live stream for KBCO... but I can't change the equalizer settings? Can anyone tell me how to do that?
The stream can be found here: http://www.kbco.com/cc-common/streaming_new/index.html, but it is opened with javascript that looks like this:
javascript:void(window.open('http://www.kbco.com/cc-common/streaming_new/index.html', 'ccTuner', 'width=668,height=420,status=no,resizable=no,scrollbars=no'))
It opens in Windows Media Player, but it's not the standard interface and I can't find the equalizer settings anywhere?

You don't get access to it. That page disables all access to right-clicking, so you don't get access to the controls and to the source of the page.

I don't need that, I only want to change the equalizer setting for the player. I don't care if it changes the system globally.

The equalizer isn't system wide - it's specific to that instance of WMP. Since the web page disabled all access to right-clicking anything on the page, you can't get access to the equalizer in that instance of WMP.

Yeah I was afraid of that. Very crappy. I didn't have any issues with right-click, but it didn't show me any options anyplace I could see. Oh well, I will just have to unplug my subs when I use Media Player. The office can't handle all that rumbly bass, so I normally just use the EQ to turn it down, and I get decent bass without boom-boom. Thank you very much for the clarity though

It's not really clear what you're asking for.
If you want the source to the C run-time library function _getch , see VC\crt\src\getch.c under your Visual Studio install folder. For Visual Studio 6.0, this is VC98\crt\src\getch.c . You might need to install the C run-time source if you haven't already.
You can find the source to the .NET Framework function Console.Read by downloading the Shared Source CLI and looking at clr\src\bcl\system\console.cs . You can also use Reflector but the comments in the original source are quite useful.
Note that in both of these cases you are not permitted to copy the source code.
The source is not supplied for the ReadConsoleInput function that the CRT uses, but I anticipate that it receives messages from the console window (which is actually created by the CSRSS.EXE process, not by the process that initially requested the console window).
Applications that create a window receive keyboard events as messages in the message queue of the thread owning the window that has the keyboard focus. These are WM_KEYDOWN , WM_KEYUP , WM_SYSKEYDOWN and WM_SYSKEYUP messages, depending on whether the Alt key is held down or not. To decode the keypresses into printable characters, the application must call the TranslateMessage function, which generates WM_UNICHAR , WM_CHAR , WM_DEADCHAR , WM_SYSCHAR or WM_SYSDEADCHAR messages as appropriate.
For more information, see "About Keyboard Input"[^] in MSDN Library.

I have a example.htm page I would like to be visible after windows XP have been locked, using Cttl-Alt-Del. There seem to be limitations on the file type that can be used, mainly pictures.
My htm document allows the display of live information from a server as a front end only, with no interactive access, which is what is required. But when the screen is locked or times-out after 5 mins and locks out I loose the display. The screen reverts back to the last know picture used or shows a blank page
I'm struggling as to where to look next for ideas, any help would be much appreciated.

From what I can tell, this is true. For security reasons, all "Active Content", i.e. web pages, used for a desktop background are disabled when the workstation is locked. Actually I think they called it "Active Desktop".
Your only hope, not that I've tried this, is to have a service running that gets the infomration it needs to update the bitmap image used as the desktop background. In theory anyway...

Well, i know that its possible to access parts of the bios under dos with certain programs like CMOSPWD (which find the bios password) so i would assume that you should be able to see the config in some way too. But it is quite low level so i have no idea how or if... (but, if i remember correctly CMOSPWD is open soruce, take a look at it..)
