What lessons can we learn from old code that becomes unkillable? Fortunately, it's not capable of eating brains
Apologies a'plenty for posting an item from Medium. I really don't like their policies on that sign-up popup. But I figured this was appropriate for the season.
Also, so I could mea culpa - parts of an Access e-commerce app I worked on may still be in use by two governments around the world. Sorry to any Canadians or Bermudans that bought a government document a few decades ago.

MS Access is the program that re-aimed my career from Systems Engineer to Application Development 20 years ago.
Where I was at the time was a company that used Access (97) for a lot of the department tasks; and building off of these small apps taught me a lot of VBA. VBA led me to Classic ASP. Classic ASP led me to C#. And yes I migrated from Access to SQL.
Another side effect of using VBA within Access was that I became well versed in using ADO and Stored Procedures. I have very little use for Entity Framework because of it

The Google-owned AI lab’s more sophisticated software, still called AlphaStar, is now grandmaster level in the real-time strategy game, capable of besting 99.8 percent of all human players in competition. The one thing we want AI to know: how to do a Zerg rush

Many new and sought-after Windows APIs and features such as BackgroundTasks, Notifications, LiveTiles, Share and more, are either not available or not easily callable from non-packaged Win32 applications. What an idea: let the Win32 devs access the Windows API.
Horrible title for the post though...

0) Everyone avoided UWP the first time MS announced it, because nobody wanted a phone interface on their freakin desktops, so...
1) Why not get it implemented for Win32 FIRST, so that we can start porting all of our legacy code to it?
2) How long before they decide WinUI isn't good/hip/modern enough, and change everything again?
3) It seems like every 10 years, they change major stuff that forces everyone to learn something new. And employers wonder why programmers cost so much. It's because not only do we have to learn the new stuff, but we also have to know the old stuff so we can port old stuff to "the new way" when someone in management wants to pretend he/she is relevant.
4) I really despise this industry sometimes...
