Joe Westby is Amnesty International’s Technology and Human Rights researcher. Recently, in response to Google’s launch of a new messaging service called "Chat", Westby argued that Google, “shows total contempt for Android users’ privacy.” Total lies! It's not just Android users!

«... thank the gods that they have made you superior to those events which they have not placed within your own control, rendered you accountable for that only which is within you own control For what, then, have they made you responsible? For that which is alone in your own power—a right use of things as they appear.» Discourses of Epictetus Book I:12

So, what does it do that cannot be done with a cheap webcam? Do they really assume homes will have a wall without anything in front of it and without any decoration? And what use would this investment have?

I was round at my mum's the other day when she got a call from "Microsoft". She was rather good:
"Hello Kevin, how are you? It's a shame, you sound like such a nice boy, why don't you just do something honest for living? Get yourself a proper job and one day you might not have to lie about working for Microsoft - that would be nice, wouldn't it? You might even be able to sleep at night." <long pause="" as="" "kevin"="" tries="" to="" explain="" that="" he="" really="" does="" work="" for="" microsoft=""> "Ah well, whatever you say, dear. If you want to talk about computers, you're in luck, my son's here - he writes Windows programs, I'll just pass the 'phone over to him ... Kevin? Kevin? Are you still there? Oh! He's gone!"

That's never going to happen again.
Did you ever see history portrayed as an old man with a wise brow and pulseless heart, weighing all things in the balance of reason?
Is not rather the genius of history like an eternal, imploring maiden, full of fire, with a burning heart and flaming soul, humanly warm and humanly beautiful?

That reminds of a site I used to visit called "Fun With Telemarketers". The guy had a bunch of recordings where he would say stuff like that to telemarketers and he would try to keep them on the line as long as possible. It was really hilarious. I don't know if it's around any more.

I've been digging into GitHub data recently, and I thought it would be fun to use that data to figure out exactly where the world's software developers live and then to visualize the results interactively using D3. You are here
