For sure, but I was referring to this.

I didn't catch that.

Has this movie been done? Is there one (yet) where an experiment to redirect an asteroid goes horribly wrong?

Kind of - I kind of remember the movie Meteor[^] where they fire nukes at an incoming meteor, and it just breaks it up into multiple dangerous incomings.

MEPs also said private facial recognition databases like Clearview AI should be prohibited. How are all those cop shows going to track the killer now?
|
|

They said nothing about Goverment databases. Your cop shows are safe...

Syniverse and carriers haven't revealed whether text messages were exposed. Good thing no one uses that for security or anything

All the claims about users being not "safe" enough, forget passwords, two factors authentication, etc. etc. etc.
And what can we users do against something like this?
5 years... 5 frigging years...
And then people call me paranoid only because I format and reinstall from a clean backup image once or twice a year...
Such processes should be mandatory for some kind of companies... just in case.
Heck I implanted something similar in the factory abroad when I was responsible for it when upgrading to next release. Redundant hardware (A+B) getting asynchron (A // B), go back to the OS-image done at the end of previous release upgrade in B, upgrade B to the current new release, add all specific configuration in B, set A offline, do needed tests in production with B, set B as active when done, do an image of B. Repeat with A. Activate synchronization again. Save those full images in an offline HDD, activate incremental backup in the online HDD. See you next year.
This way you always have a clean image, in case of your active backup getting compromised. Changes done during the year can be "diffed" using virtual machines. Mostly not needed because there is a good protocol of what is done in server, when by whom.
It adds a some hours (maybe a couple of days) of work comparing it with the "on the fly" methode, but it can save you A LOT of problems.

Stunning that no one saw this as a potential security issue. Just pay someone to be paranoid. The best part are the responses by the assorted companies:
"T-Mobile provided Ars a statement saying that it has "no indication that text messages or other types of personal information were exposed. "
Translation: We have no f'ing idea.
"Syniverse is apparently confident that it has everything under control but told the SEC that it could still discover more problems resulting from the breach"
You were wide open for 5 years. You have no f'ing clue.
"Syniverse repeatedly declined to answer specific questions from Motherboard about the scale of the breach and what specific data was affected"
Ya think?

This is ridiculous. The fact that *all* of the major cell phone carriers used this one company says volumes.
