You should try the book.
Seriously though, it's a great book. And outside of tech docs I'm not much of a reader.

Or rather, books. (The guide is considered the longest trilogy in history, filling four volumes.)
That said, I fully agree with you. In the written story, you will find loads of funny details, descriptions and thoughts that simply can't be transformed into a screen story. Escpecially not when the story fills four volumes and the movie fills 110 minutes.
In a few, exceptional cases, movies based on novels do add something extra, but at least 98% looses a whole lot going from book to screen. Maybe most actions can be transferred, and I guess that is what the movie audience is looking for. What you loose is the rest, that which goes beyond visible, physical actions. (If a movie maker tries to convey something beyond action, the movie is quickly labeled as 'artsy', or even 'European', and rejected by the general audience )
Edit: I forgot about the fifth volume of the trilogy.

Oxford-based Diffblue has claimed its AI will automate one of the most important but tedious tasks in software development: writing unit tests. Could I get an AI to write and AI to write an AI to write...?
And as they point out in their subhead, "The code might have bugs in it to begin with, and we can't tell if the current logic that you have in the code is correct or not, because we don't know what the intent is of the programmer" Hurrah!

Did you ever see history portrayed as an old man with a wise brow and pulseless heart, weighing all things in the balance of reason?
Is not rather the genius of history like an eternal, imploring maiden, full of fire, with a burning heart and flaming soul, humanly warm and humanly beautiful?
