It's small enough to fit inside a shoebox, yet this robot on four wheels has a big mission: keeping factories and other large facilities safe from hackers. "Your move, creep."

A verifiable computation is a computation that produces an output along with a proof certifying something about that output. The language calls to me for some reason
Sad that I haven't the faintest idea what it actually is or for

Input: 1 + 1
Output: Yes, 1 + 1 does equal 2 <rolleyes>

Hugo- and Nebula-winning science fiction author David Gerrold was spot-on in his 1999 predictions about smartphones. Now he predicts computing’s future…again. "I'm presumin' that I could be kinda human, if I only had a heart."

The web was never supposed to be a few walled gardens of concentrated content owned by a few major publishers; it was supposed to be a cacophony of different sites and voices. "The third little pig worked hard all day and built his house with bricks."

Riiight. So we can all be subjected to drivel like that. As if we don't have enough of a cacophony of pointless mutterances on the likes of FB and Twitter.

His definition of "few" is different from, well, everyone.
"but in a world where you choose what you see rather than letting a third party decide for you..." I wonder if he ever tires of knocking down his straw man?

Shum didn’t share further details about these new devices, but the exec said that everything Microsoft does these days is “all infused by AI.” Hardware-accelerated Clippy, perhaps?

Apparently AI now means "software which solves a problem using user data."
(I just had a command prompt open. I pressed the up key and it correctly predicted what I wanted to do!)

Researchers were then startled to find that the number 7 is sometimes written with a dash through it. They also found that some people who comment on Code Project have writing that is often indecipherable.
"Next thing you know," the researcher said, "is there will be more than one color blue. And I'll bet David Gerrold didn't predict that!"

Now it’s time for a final glimpse into the future. Today we’ll cover another two possible C# 8.0 features: target-typed new expressions and covariant return types. C# 8.0 marks the end of the world?

Yes, because they are going to rename it C##. Or aliens are going to arrive.

The surveillance imposed on us today is worse than in the Soviet Union. We need laws to stop this data being collected in the first place Enjoy trying to put the toothpaste back into the tube
It's Stallman(tm), so you know it's 'radical'

Maybe it has something to do with Soviet Union not existing any more?

You mean Stallman is actually right?

Hopefully, this isn't a Leslie. I searched and didn't see anyone post it yet.
It's an interesting (and somewhat annoying letter) really.
Satya Nadella email to employees: Embracing our future: Intelligent Cloud and Intelligent Edge | Stories[^]
What's annoying...
Nadella: First, computing is more powerful and ubiquitous from the cloud to the edge.
I guess I just don't know what "the edge" is.
Nadella: Computing experiences are evolving to include multiple senses and are no longer bound to one device at a time but increasingly spanning many as we move from home to work and on the go.
"Multiple senses"?!? Or maybe, hearing and vision alone. I don't want to smell my computer.
That multiple senses point seems to have leaked into his thoughts from the idea of multiple devices.
Yes, I do want to be able to access content from multiple devices.
I do like his reference to conway's law and do think that is a large barrier at microsoft.
Quote: To truly get the best impact from our efforts, we will have to push ourselves to transcend Conway’s law[^].

"Edge" - It's the new buzzword for the device in front of you.
"Edge" is to "Cloud" as "Client" is to "Server"...

Thanks for explaining that. "Edge" really doesn't scan though.
This feels like a term that the nerds (Microsoft) make up while the cool kids (Apple) sit at a distance and laugh.

They are all nerds at Microsoft and Apple, no cool kids, just nerds...jerky nerds at that.

Maybe the senses he is referring to are sight, hearing, and touch. When I was working on augmented and virtual reality devices and associated software, I also had to incorporate haptics into the system. The next evolution into augmented and virtual reality is the ability to touch the object(s) you are looking at. We were working on training simulators to train Apache helicopter maintenance personnel.
You wouldn't believe the number of offers we were getting from the porn industry for the technology.
