I don't know why I'm not surprised...
Last Symantec product I had to use and maintain was Backup & Recovery, the one with which you had to install a whole Altiris suite just to deploy the product. Experience was awful, backup were failing more often than succeeding, and it took several weeks to get a support "engineer" who did not know how to solve the problem anyway... We almost lost our client and had to provide another backup solution gracefully.

I've had good experiences with Norton Enterprise Anti-Visus, but really, really bad experiences with the End-Point/Altiris crap.
(At one point, I wrote a program that ran after each build to clean up the mess that Altiris left behind. The IT department at the company was very good, except for this one thing and even me sending them debug traces showing exactly what was going on didn't persuade them to get rid of Altiris.)

How is this news? Surely this would be better in the Lounge.

One of my children has had Windows 10 installed on their laptop without my knowledge.
Since then - network traffic has gone off the charts.
Considering the hours I have spent mitigating this Windows 10 fiasco, and the hours I will now have to spend making sure other machines on the home network are not compromised by this OS, what are the legal ramifications of this considering a child cannot be bound to any EULA or legal encumbrances?
Livid is an understatement.

On my wifes machine, I found OneDrive syncing up a folder she didn't setup but just also happen to contain an Outlook PST. Any change to the PST and the sync of the entire file starts over, to the tune of 487GBs(!)in a week.

A worthy project would be to spoof Windows 10 itself when it tries to connect out to all those mysterious IPs.
NOOPs byte level patching (in memory) also comes to mind.
Time to pull out Softice again...

Well MS has more lawyers than you could ever afford, so going legal probably isn't a worthy idea.
I just went through this last week.[^] Win 10 suddenly installed itself.
AFTER it was finished installed me it asked me to accept the EULA, and when I declined it rolled me back.
If it's not broken, fix it until it is

Since I haven't seen Windows 10 increase internet traffic measurably, if at all, I'd look more closely at a) your child's surfing behavior, b) whether s/he has malware installed and c) whether s/he is running a torrent, even if inadvertently.

I fixed it - Windows 10 was replaced with Linux. Kids nowadays don't really care what OS it is - they do everything in the browser anyways.
Regarding traffic - it's the "little things" that windows 10 does crawling home networks etc.
Have no use for that security risk in my home.
|
|
|
|
|
Except I don't believe that since I would have seen it.
As for security risk, if you think you're safe with Linux, you're delusional.
(And my kids very much care what the OS is--not Mac and not Linux.)

Quite a few people I know (and some of us have been doing dev low level in windows since 3.1) are openly stating that windows 8.x / 7 is their last OS from MS.
I don't need a machine that hits over 60 IPs just sitting there without even having a browser running.
It's pretty bad when you block a certain IP that Windows Explorer uses causes you not to even be able to get on the net if that IP is blocked. Phk dat.

What a load of nonsense and proof of nothing. Windows 10 is a great OS and your accusations are baseless. You really, really need to see what your kids are doing. I strongly suspect a bit torrent.
|
|
|
|
|
First of all - there were no bit torrents running or anything like it.
Second of all - I am referring to Windows OS traffic.
Seriously, Microsoft has lost sight of the fact that our computers are our computers, and not Microsofts'. If I want to go back to the mainframe mentality - I'll go back to pdp11s.

What do you do if you get busted for pirating a terrible Adam Sandler movie? Deny it. That seems to be the lesson of a recently dismissed federal case, which raises the burden of proof that copyright owner must meet in order to hold you accountable for infringement. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it
