Algoraves, or algorithmic raves—an offshoot of a type of improvised algorithmic composition known as live coding—are a growing movement among both programmers and musicians. Over the past few years across western Europe and in places like Mexico, Australia, Japan and even as close as Canada, live-coded performances have given electronic artists and bands a way to break through the stand-around DJ culture of today’s electronic music in live, messy fashion.
Who needs a DJ when you can have a coder?

All those cool 3D holographic interactive user interfaces that people see in sci-fi movies and TV shows are finally getting closer to reality. Microsoft Research recently showed off a new project called Holograph that was made to render large data, not just in 3D, but in a way that it looks like it is being projected above a display. "You're my only hope"

Let's see if they take credit for the Tupac hologram at Coachella.

Social news site Reddit has downgraded the status of its "technology" section after a censorship row. It follows a report by the Daily Dot that revealed headlines posted to the area had been secretly deleted if they featured certain words.

My favorite kind of histories are those told from an insider's perspective. The story of Richard the Lionheart is full of great battles and dynastic intrigue. The story of one of his soldiers, not so much. Yet the soldiers' story, as someone who has experienced the real consequences of decisions made and actions taken, is more revealing. Chat Wars: the empires strike back (and forth)

Fascinating perspective. I'm not sure quite how well the declining empire metaphor applies to Microsoft and the tech industry, but the argument he's making is more or less sound.

boo hiss, article refers to site that requires paid subscription to read entire article. Just when it was getting good... argh!

But yeah. Sorry about that.

Nope, paid subscription required (min $3 monthly). Not your fault, just me ranting. You'd think David would just print post this in Slate since he's already paid by them.

which link? The article Kent linked appears complete and both articles linked from it (mashable and nplus) appear complete when I scrolled down them to the end. Neither are showing a pay-me moneybeg at the bottom of the text anyway (haven't read them yet).
Did you ever see history portrayed as an old man with a wise brow and pulseless heart, waging all things in the balance of reason?
Is not rather the genius of history like an eternal, imploring maiden, full of fire, with a burning heart and flaming soul, humanly warm and humanly beautiful?

Really? I get a huge wall of text (33 screen tall page at 1680x1050) and no paywall. I switched browsers and saw the same thing in IE, so it's no my ad blocker munching a half baked overlay paywall.

Like I said, it is no longer the case. The paywall was there on the first couple of days. But, I guess when the articles age they no longer charge?

Putting a can of beer in a brown paper bag is about to look like child's play. A new product that's somehow been approved by US regulators makes booze as discreet as a packet of sugar. It's called Palcohol, and it transforms a shot of vodka or rum into a pocketable pouch of powder. "Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down In a most delightful way"

For Larry Heck, a distinguished engineer in Microsoft Research, this first release of Microsoft Cortana offers a taste of what he has in mind. Over time, Heck wants Cortana to interact in an increasingly anticipatory, natural manner. "Do not speak the seven-word activation code unless you mean it."

Just as CDs replaced tapes as a more efficient means of playing music, and digital files replaced CDs to do the same, HTML5 is making Flash obsolete. See above news item about IE6 never dying.
Flash will probably be around as long as COBOL (not to insult COBOL by association)
