Open source maintainers are exhausted and rarely paid. A new generation wants to change the economics. Time for shareware to make a return?

I think what's difficult about the open source model that if a company wants to contribute to a open source project in money or labor, that company also helping its competitors, and this is very conflicting. For projects that have many users that conflict diminishes, but for projects with a relatively small amount of users and with just 1 or 2 people running the project it becomes a bigger concern.

Fight is a relative term; Intel had an annual gross profit of $39B as of March 2018. This is almost three times the market cap of AMD (who had profits of ~$2B in the same time frame.)
Yes, Intel needs to clean up some of it's operations and get a better focus on some things (especially 10nm fabs), and AMD has lit a fire under their collective butts, however they aren't in the dire straights which the article insinuates.

Yes, since I've worked with green "senior developers" who were really "junior developers" (and sometimes not even that.) Unfortunately, the opinions of these folks too often held sway to the detriment, sometimes severe detriment, to the project and company.
Fairly recently I worked with a very talented developer who had the title "junior developer" and was quite honest about needing time and experience to earn "developer" and "senior developer" titles. It was refreshing.

Because there are no (or much less) big companies that can support junior developers and have them grow and gain experience within the company, move from junior to senior in 5, 10 years.
Today, there are a lot of small companies and they cannot support that model.
I'd rather be phishing!

The real unspoken elephant in the room is that 50% W7 now, is much higher than XP was 18mo before its originally planned EOL.
MS is at some point either going to have to extend support by a few years or have about 1/3rd of the internet online with foreverday bugs. They could turn free W10 upgrades back on for consumers I suppose; but on the enterprise side a lot is legacy crapware blocking upgrades, and volume licensing means that they could go W10 anytime they're ready anyway.
