The whole Miller 7 +/- 2 thing is interesting.

Let's assume that the average person has 7 channels, one of which is semi-permanently occupied with food and another which is permanently populated by sex. That leaves 5.

Of those five, at least one will be occupied, in an office that will be with thoughts of "Bloody hell! Does he/she not realise that telephones were invented so you don't have to shout?" If you're working at home, it's more likely to be "What is that bloody cat up to now?" So we're left with 4 at best, maybe just 2 or 3.

Those will probably be tied up with less pressing but nonetheless important things like what your favourite sports team is doing wrong, wondering what's on at the movies and deciding what to listen to later on. That kind of leaves us with zero capacity.

Yet somehow we still manage to write code, fix bugs, win arguments with databases and generally triumph over technology.

Are programmers actually superhuman, I wonder? The rest of the world might not see it that way, but Miller's Law really does suggest that we are!
Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect. - Mark Twain
