Just use an embedded uController that can be in circuit programmed.
Well there's the rub, I know next to nothing about micro controllers, any suggestions on a good place to start learning about them? I'm not even sure that our guru knows much about them either since I've never seen him using one.
Try here: http://www.microchip.com/[^] - one of the most popular, from little bitty ones (6 pin SOT/8 pin DIP), that need little or no external components through to big(ish) buggers! Their support is pretty good too.
Real men don't use instructions. They are only the manufacturers opinion on how to put the thing together.
Interesting site. Thanks. Any suggestion on a book or similar to get started? They have courses and stuff, but it's difficult to see where to start. I'd need a more general overview before diving into anything specific.
