I bit the bullet and upgraded my desktop at home using Microsoft's upgrade offer (£24.99 to go to Win 8 Pro) and all was surprisingly painless, apart from an incompatible sound card (an old Soundblaster live). After I switched on the on-board Raltek sound card and took the old SB out, eveything worked fine, and I spent several hours poking round the new "Not Metro" interface, and quite like it.
I fiddled with the power settings so I could hibernate the machine, and sent it to sleep at about midnight when I hit the pit - my desk and PC are in a corner of my bedroom.
At 3.00am I was woken by a noise - my PC had turned itself on and the noise of the fans woke me - WTF?
I have since found out that the automatic maintenance feature defaults to kicking off at 3.00am and can rouse the machine from slumber. Needless to say I have changed this to start at 10.00am, long after I have left for work
