This should not come as a surprise to anyone
If it's not broken, fix it until it is

I waited until the last minute and then bought a new Win7 machine. Hopefully Windows 9 or whatever they call it will look like Windows and not my cellphone.

I bought a Toshiba laptop with Win7 at Office Depot. 4G RAM and 600G hard drive for about $480. Then I got silly and bought a 23-inch flat screen and a Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse. When at home the laptop sits under the monitor stand. When I'm on the road now the 17-inch monitor always seems tiny for the first couple of days.

Personally, I don't mind the look. I don't like the jarring separation with the desktop though. My main reason for avoiding Windows 8 at this point is the Apple-like direction that Microsoft is taken (e.g. requirement to use the Windows Store).

DoH?
Only metro app are required to use the store... (I think offloading is possible, inside your company for example, but I'm not sure..)
Desktop app works and install the same as before
A train station is where the train stops. A bus station is where the bus stops. On my desk, I have a work station....

That's my understanding as well. But, their direction is metro, so those apps are really the point. Yes, I can do the same thing with desktop apps, but then why migrate from Windows 7?

And they are nice. It is about time for a paradigm shift.

Windows 8 is Windows 7, with extras. Once you skip the tile bullshit, and open the Desktop, it's Windows 7 and some. And faster.

That can help![^]

You don't need a start menu, you have a start page which can be easily customized.

I don't need a start page!
In fact, I don't need a start menu as well, it is true.. but it make it easy to find the newly installed program shortcut that I can drag in my favorite's toolbar!

HO, and with Start8, I can start directly on the desktop!
save me the trouble on clicking on desktop!

Dont talk like that... (You don't need a start menu...)
I have a friend that make all the stuff with UNIX Terminal...
And when I see him... Its so fast that I dont know what he is doing!

Not surprised but I thought it would do better than Vista?

I was skeptical at first but now that I have been using it for a couple of weeks I like it.

Functionally I think it would be a good system but it's boxy and 3rd grad artsy. I think Wine will have less whine.

It takes a little getting used to but I have gotten used to it.

But you don't sound excited about it, is the wow factor there or is it just another OS?

If I wanted to feel emotionally attached to my computer I would buy an App£e.
There isn't a wow factor but it is an improved OS IMHO. I like the way that you can right click in the lower left hand corner and get a pop-up administrative menu.
It contains links to the desktop, run, search, windows explorer, control panel, task manager, command prompt (Admin), command prompt, computer management, disk management, device manager, system, event viewer, power options, network connections, programs and features all in one place with a single click.
I am learning keyboard shortcuts that allow me to navigate quickly. I have customized my start page to contain links to things like lock, hibernate, restart, power off, windows explorer, control panel, administrative tools, Opera, Word, Visio, Photoshop, Notepad++, etc., etc.
In other words all the programs for which I used to have shortcuts on my desktop.
As for Metro apps they are one of the reasons I installed it in the first place. As you well know in this industry the boat is leaving the dock and you can either be on it or be left behind.
Having over a decade experience in web developent makes the HTML5, CSS3, Javascript (jQuery) platform a natural for me, although I must admit that MVC4 is still going to be the platform of choice for developing for the web/tablet/phone platforms, but that is a totally different discussion.
I am looking forward to building Metro apps, especially with active tiles that enable you to see highlights of things like potential trade setups in the FX market, program progress when preforming long tasks, events coming up, etc.
Like I said there is no wow factor but I really don't see any advantage to Windows 7 and see no reason to not move on to Windows 8.
The interface is brash which probably puts a lot of people off who do not like to get out of their comfort zone, but that has never been me.
As my ex'es will confirm I am willing to move on and never look back.

I installed Windows 8 about 2 weeks ago and like it.
It took a day or two to get used to the start page but now that I have customized it I don't see what
the problem is.
Yes it is different, but that doesn't make it bad.

Given that it's having an effect on hardware sales, the impact could be much more destructive to MS than Vista was (although the sound of contracts being torn up is perhaps not so noisy).
