It is a lot cheaper to drink at home now.
Margin on beer for publicans is tiny.
Rates for pubs are prohibitive.
I don't think the smoking ban has had the effect some claim however.
Pubs all over the UK are shutting down daily.
Every man can tell how many goats or sheep he possesses, but not how many friends.

Pubs used to be a working class thing, you know.
But going out to the pub for one night costs you more than a pony.
It's getting expensive to keep a pub open, especially in big cities where the real estate prices are going through the roof; and the lager isn't getting any cheaper either.
So pub owners have to raise their prices, which lowers their business; unless they aim for a richer audience.
Listen, I know fat Pete may come across as a bit weird, but he can handle a car if he has to. Don't worry, if everything goes as planned we'll have our plane tickets to Gibraltar before midnight.

Pubs are in decline because drinking is so damn expensive these days, and also because there are not large numbers of manual labour jobs where everyone has a drink down the pub after work. That's been increasingly true for 20 years, I guess. So demand is down, and costs are a long way up (particularly labour – bar staff have to be paid at least minimum wage – and rent). Most British towns are over-supplied with pubs for the modern level of demand so it's inevitable that some will close.

Rent/real estate is a problem around the world in all major cities from London to NYC to Hong Kong to Sydney to Mumbai.
