An old friend[^] who was a self-described gardener once said a weed was anything you didn't want in the garden. I believe this did not extend to bloody pigeons and stupid moggies but I feel they fall into the same category.
And if Google told you it was beneficial to your health to jump into a volcano ... ?
Kidding (maybe?)! It is a common misapprehension but there is a clear distinction. A tree is fractal, with both roots and top branching out from a single large (relatively) trunk. A shrub has a crown of stems of equal size arising from either a central or diffuse root system.
So - what's the punch line? Does the story have an interesting twist or something. Perhaps the window was closed at the time? Seems rather typical.* That is, except that the 'gator was dead at the time.
