Well first off, if considering a new launcher, get the app "home switcher". It allows you to quickly set all the defaults and preferences for which launcher you want.
It runs along side Sense, you'd just have a new default. The one problem is that when using any launcher other than Sense, you can't use Sense widgets. That doesn't bother me though, as I don't really like or have a use for the Sense widgets. Android own widgets, and ones from apps are what I use anyway.
It won't override any configurations you have with Sense either, each launcher has it's own save state so you don't lose anything by trying.

You can tilt the phone on its horizontal which makes it easier to type, and you can type two fingered - or thumbs.
You can also select the type of keyboard you like - full QWERTY, two letter per key, or 3 letters per key.
The predictive software is also pretty smart, I've had no real problems with it.
Have you tried performing the keyboard calibration? I was constantly hitting the key to the left of the one I wanted, ran the calibration and it's been much better since.
You get all these newspapers and TV shows, *cough* The Gadget Show *cough* who come out with things like "The iPhone is the king of all smartphones" etc - which isn't journalism, it's just advertising.
When it clearly isn't, it's much tighter than that.
When the iPhone first came out, then yeah, it was way in front of anything else on the market;
but now there are a whole range of cool phones out there.
Shame that most people don'd dig around a bit to find out more information before they buy.

I had a Desire for a week or so now and it's an excellent phone. The only problem is, battery life is horrible if you use it a lot. I mean, I arrive at home with still some juice in the battery, but I have to recharge it every night.
Have you seen the Blackberry OS 6.0 preview ? It's very cool OS. search on Youtube for the official video. And the good news is 9700 is going to get the upgrade, as it has 512mb RAM. so choosing between these two devices is a difficult choice. also 9700 has nice screen and unbeatable performance (you will never see 'please wait' message anywhere). but right now the current OS on BB is bit outdated. so unless they confirm the new OS upgrade you should give more weight on HTC.
