We are having a tech refresh and have an option to pick one of these:
Lenovo ThinkPad T430:
i7 quad core - 3520M
8GB RAM
500GB 7200rpm HD
14in 1600x900 LCD
or
Lenovo ThinkPad W530:
i7 quad core,
16GB RAM,
256 GB - SSD
15.4in 1600x900 LCD
For me 256GB is little less and that's what concern me. Screen size is not an issue and I am ok with 14.1in.
What would you prefer and why?

The second - 14in is a bit small for doing anything serious.
See? Size does matter!

I would go with the second one just for the performance difference.
Although, I do prefer 14in over 15in.

The 14" screen would be the killer for me, too small for 1600x900. You need to be up on the latest reliability results for SSD though if you go for the W530. There's some rubbish out there although hopefully not in a Lenovo. I nearly bought a ThinkPad of very similar spec 18 months ago but went for the Asus N53S instead, my 500GB Data partition is nowhere near half full despite me being a complete open source magpie so I wouldn't worry about 256GB unless you're planning on forking Chromium

Second one with no doubt!
The resolution is the same still that inch and a half counts. Plus there is an SSD which makes a hell of a difference!

How are you going to use your new computer?
Are you going to run any wirtual machines? If you are, you're probably going to have at least one virtual Windows Server - so ram will be an issue.
How about database servers? I have both Oracle and Sql server installed - so the 8GB memory I currently have is far too little, Visual Studio alone uses more than 600MB - so I guess I would go for the 16GB machine - I guess it comes with a DVD player that can be thrown out in favour of an extra harddisk ...

Number 2 and a monitor. May be a nice little shiny USB HD monitor.

#2 is a no-brainer. The SSD and increased RAM will blow away #1. Unless you're certain you need more than 256G, in which case you have no choice but to go for #1.

Independent of the screen size issue: More RAM, and SSD.
The RAM might eat the SSD battery life extension, but you still end up with more RAM and a harder-to-kill-mechanically disk.
It's a SSD, so dock & backup frequently, which also gives you a chance to deal with the limited size.
