I suggest never upgrading anything; always wipe and reinstall. I also don't trust any "uninstall".
On the other hand... the other day I upgraded SQL Server 2008 Express to 2012 Express -- I haven't had any trouble with it yet. But this sort of thing is why I'd prefer to have separate systems for database and development.
I tried it years ago, and even posted here about it. It can't be done. Worse, uninstalling SS2005 doesn't remove it, but leaves the system cluttered with just enough crap to ensure that SS2008 will never work properly. Don't even think about ever successfully accessing the local help files. The only success I had was installing 2008 on a different machine which had never been touched by a previous version.
This is weird - the first time I started up MSSE2008, it claimed there were instances of 2005 on my machine. This was after I'd removed everything and installed just 2008R2.

My brake pads got hosed and tore off into the gears or something causing my car to choke. Almost a grand to fix it. At least I'll be out in time to pick up my son early from school and I got my iPad handy.
Anyone checked out the C# and ooVium apps for the iPad?
So I suppose Canadian, British, and Australian folks don't get Thursday and Friday off for Thanksgiving.
I honestly don't understand how those in 3rd world countries do it.
Too bad ya'll aren't Mexicans or you could come to America.
My stars, that is some if the finest trolling I've done since...well, yesterday.
We need more holidays. We kill lots of people for so many different reasons that I think the reasons should just be left off. We will call them all death days, just to represent that we did , in fact, kill people to earn it.
