1: Decide that you want to get something done. For example, let's say I want to get Dalek Dave banned from the CP forums because he has more reputation points than myself and I find it annoying. Of course, I cannot sell the idea that he should be banned for such a flimsy reason so I have to come up with some other reason.
2: As it turns out, I knew a guy in High School who was a racist. This guy's name was 'Dave'. No this guy has absolutely no relationship to Dalek Dave but that isn't required. I contact a few friends and start a rumor campaign that 'Dave' is actually a racist forum handle. Soon people are wondering how Dalek Dave could be so insensitive.
3: Eventually someone asks Dalek Dave on the forum about his racist forum handle - at this point, the ball is in Dave's court but the end is already assured by virtue of the fact that someone asked the question. Dave is going to make a big mistake - he'll try to use logic to answer the objections which will end up making him look like a heartless prick.
4: At this point I'll chime in with "Doesn't anyone on this forum care about people of race [fill in the blank]?" About 1,000 people who've run their whole lives off emotion will fall over themselves to voice support for the permanent removal of Dave from the forums. There will be candlelight vigils, crying women of Oprah, a congressional investigation, etc.
5: If voting is turned on I'll post a self-righteous bit of nonsense about how pleased I am that the people at CP take racism seriously. It would get between 10K-15K of points as the crowd of brainwashed bots re-affirm the execution of Dave by shouting AMEN to every proclaimation of their resident watch dog.
6: Dave enlists the help of John Simmons and they hunt down MehGerbil in real life and use his corpse for target practice out in a field somewhere.
7: A granite statue to erected to MehGerbil. The inscription reads: "In Memory of the brave sacrifice of this dear fellow in his fight against the evil of DAVE".
8: Later, politicians quote me in additional witch hunts, ascribing to me things I never said.
When my girls were young I didn't allow them to stay at other people's houses - I don't care if I knew the couple of work/church or whatever. If a sleep over were to occur, it happened in my home. End of story. People didn't like it - tough - it's my job to protect my kid.
How did people know you weren't a criminal...?
Also, did your girls go to school? That's a lot of time amongst potential criminals...
The United States invariably does the right thing, after having exhausted every other alternative. -Winston Churchill
America is the only country that went from barbarism to decadence without civilization in between. -Oscar Wilde
Wow, even the French showed a little more spine than that before they got their sh*t pushed in.[^] -Colin Mullikin
First, the politicians don't give a rat's ass about your kid. We'd be better
off if people would get their heads around that fact. If your kid was on a
street corner with a tin cup and no shoes the politician and his/her limo
wouldn't even notice as they slid by - so do us all a favor and don't buy that
horse sh*t. The impassioned pleas from the podium are acting, and not even good
acting at that.
However to be fair what they do care about is in what way the general public mood seems to be fluttering willy-nilly at the moment. Hardly their fault that the general public gives into fear mongering.
If it's on record with the government, it's subject to abuse, and more often than not, that abuse is covert, and usually involves violating someone's rights.
".45 ACP - because shooting twice is just silly" - JSOP, 2010 ----- You can never have too much ammo - unless you're swimming, or on fire. - JSOP, 2010 ----- "Why don't you tie a kerosene-soaked rag around your ankles so the ants won't climb up and eat your candy ass." - Dale Earnhardt, 1997
Now, I am not saying this government would use it for evil purposes, nor the next, but there is no guarantee that some future leadership would not misuse it.
I'll say it.. the only reason government, whether yours or mine over here, want this sort of thing is to control the masses. Control what they see, read or talk about, and you have complete control over them, say, throwing a revolution when they have had enough Gov BS?
Take certain countries with a lot of sand int he news the last few months. Civil unrest, and the gov is trying to control and/or shut down the net to prevent overthrow. A few other countries have insane(to many of us at least) amounts of gov control over what the people can see. They do NOT want the uneducated masses to get wind of the truth in the rest of the world.
As far as the rest of your post, I agree, using something like that as an excuse for stupid laws like that is pathetic and in my opinion, takes away from the real problem of those things while doing absolutely nothing to help prevent them.

If "in God's name" has been responsible for more atrocities than anything else in human history, "for the children" is in second place and closing fast in the modern era.
Did you ever see history portrayed as an old man with a wise brow and pulseless heart, waging all things in the balance of reason?
Is not rather the genius of history like an eternal, imploring maiden, full of fire, with a burning heart and flaming soul, humanly warm and humanly beautiful?
Training a telescope on one’s own belly button will only reveal lint. You like that? You go right on staring at it. I prefer looking at galaxies.

Is there a term that can be applied to Law Making that says that any time a
politician uses "Child Abuse", "Paedophiles" or "Protecting Our Children" as an
excuse to draft a law relating to invasion of privacy, then that law is
I read an article this morning that the silverlight.net site was taken down, or more accurately, redirected to the msdn site. I've spent the past year investing in the technology and now I'm looking to be more and more a fool for having done so - I was interested in using Silverlight as my new desktop application technology. It seemed to be a good approach as it would help prepare me for Windows RT.
Frankly, at this point, Microsoft can go die in a flaming vat of Malaria for all I care.
I don't want to use the HTML stack because it's the most poorly constructed flaming pile of dog poop I've ever encountered. Not every application should have to be in the internet - I don't want to have to master a dozen different technologies distributed by a dozen different insecure companies that needlessly iterate products for the sole purpose of incrementing the version number. Getting them to play nice is a nightmare.
At this point I've no idea what I'm supposed to use for desktop applications as my company won't be going to Windows 8 for at least 3 years - if not longer. Microsoft seems intent on pissing away application development in favor of the idiotic consumer market - because we all know we need more content that feature LOLZ CATS.
Why the hell should I embrace Windows RT when it will be replaced by Windows XX or some other nonsense? I'm trying to write business software here - I cannot have a complete ecosystem change every 24 months because when it costs $50K plus to develop software it needs to work for 10+ years to realize a decent ROI. Oh no matter that - I'll port 10,000 man hours of applications to Silverlight, then RT, then ??, then ??, then ?? over the course of 9 months while picking up a dozen new ways of doing things. No problem - we can afford a staff of 200 people to keep up with it.
