As the saying goes, work is the curse of the drinking classes.

Well, the city of Lafayette, Indiana shut off our water earlier today because we had not paid, even though we had evidence of payment. It turns out that even though we had to go to the city hall and change our address in person, they did not update the online account number for us, and we actually paid into the old account. They found this and moved the money, but still didn't alert us NOR did they update the account number. We got no notices that our water would be turned off, and we had to fight them for a while to get it back on.
It seems someone in the city government didn't do their job, and that the IT infrastructure there is nonexistent.
We also have had issues with most other utilities here due to IT errors and complete technological ineptness.
I hate this place. There are over 200 excellent computer repair shops here, but it seems that no one can hire an IT guy that actually knows what they are doing! How counter-intuitive is that?!?
They would not let me come along. When I'm bored, I get creative with electronics and programming. They would not like what I can make out of parts scavenged from the spaceship if they lock me into it for a few months
I'm buying most of the meat we eat at a local farmer. It's always nice to be able to bring the kids and pet the animals before you buy them.
Today I wanted to buy some meat for a slow cooking stew, and I like to put a piece of bone in it for the taste.
But he stopped doing the nice little pieces of soup bone that I used to buy, because it ruins the saw a bit to fast and he doesn't want to buy another one for the purpose.
But if I saw it myself I could get it for free.
So, what do I do with a five pound marrow bone?
Anyone got any good recipe for making your own stock?
Any other Ideas?
People say nothing is impossible, but I do nothing every day.
Hmmm, I hadn't thought of using the slow cooker for that. Great idea! I usually toss everything in a big stock pot and let it simmer, but someone has to keep an eye on it. The crock pot can be safely ignored for days. Thanks!
My housemate and I used to make a lot of bone broth from a local 100% grass fed beef farm[^], but we stopped because it does sort of stink up the house cooking it for 3 days (at the time, I had a couple other young women staying upstairs and they were vegetarian, and it just so happened that the stinkiest room in the house was their bedroom!!!)
One of the important things (as mentioned in the first link) is to add vinegar as that helps to draw out the calcium so you get a more nutritious broth.
So, basically, you were living in a house full of women ?
Yes, but don't let your imagination get away with you - it just happened to work out that way, but it was probably the most fun and interesting time of my life. My housemates brought a lot of new ideas and experiences (NOT what you think!), knew a lot of interesting people that would come and visit - people from other countries, we had a member of the amazing contra dance band Perpetual eMotion[^] stay over one night, we would have our meals together and great conversation and antics, one of my housemate's, her mom stayed for a few weeks which was cool as she's doing some really interesting things with interfaith studies, etc. It was like family, where you actually like your family!
Buy a hell of a large caserole and chug the whole piece in?
Or - Wait for it: Find a butcher that's more service minded!

I had cause this morning to check the event logs on my webserver and was shocked to find thousands of failed login attempts for the user 'scan' and 'Administrator' neither of which are valid user names for that machine. I checked the incoming log on the router and found only two IP addresses that seemed unusual. Whois resolves them back to Chinese tech companies. My ISP will be getting a complaint.
