If you have never drunk keg stella from the Lueven brewery in Leuven you will never know just how good a beer it really is. Clean, crisp, delicate, with a nice alcojhol content and no hangover. It is NOTHING like the stella you get elsewhere, and not even like the bottled stuff which is horrible too.
It's a question that is hard to answer since it depends totally on what you like, there are so many [Belgium Beers.]
I would ask your friend what type of beer he or she likes (Lager, Blond and so on) and then do some tasting in a local pub
Only to be answered by real Belgians. Namely me ! (it's one of the very few things to be proud of these days )
First of all you have two major lines in beer here.
The normal beers: Stella, Maes, Jupiler, ... etc. Will not discuss further.
the upper class beers: Here's the good stuff. Will discuss further.
It all depends on what you want. Solely on having a taste I would go for Duvel or Leffe. However you have many beers with character as well (or a story). Duvel has character because of it's reputation, but there are others like all the abbey beers or the "trappist", which is a difference: Belgian beers[^]. I like Hopus as well (which is actually poured in two glasses )
All the trappist beers are very good, can't go wrong there.
If you're going for bitter tastes, you should go for more blond beers, the brown ones are more sweet. (in general)
Whatever you do. the beer you buy will be completely USELESS if you don't pour it in the correct glass. So if it is a souvenir, make sure you buy the (correct) glass with it.
Hope this helps. Feel free to inquire further if necessary.
