Hello out there I need help with a project.
Retrieving information from a text file that is in a website.
For example: Steve Smith, a runner, would like to retrieve his race results, stored as text files, from a number of different websites. The results gathered would pertain to him only, not all participants, and need to be stored in a database for future reference.

guess I shouldn't have replied to this in the other forum area where it was off topic lol...
with .NET
use WebClient class to download file
use regular expression class to extract info
use SQLConnection and SQLCommand to pump data into SQL Server
'Cause I'm living on things that excite me, be it pastries or lobsters or love... I'm just trying to get by, being quiet and shy, in a world full of push and shove...

Thanks for the help.
I am a novice at this stuff. Is the information you have given me instructions on how to automate this "spidering"
process via a website and to have the information stored ona database
|
|
|
|
|
why don't you just try and see for yourself Lots of documentation on those classes I mentioned. You can download a file, process a regex expression and store that info to a database in about 10 lines of code or so. Enjoy.

i have a .aspx page and in this page i am using a javascript function from a .js file.
in my .aspx page i have
Home.js has my javascript functions.
now the problem is that when i called my file with machine name i.e
http://mmm-dev/mypage.aspx, it works fine and all the javascript functions are executed properly but when i called the same page through external ips it did not works
can any body tell me what the problem is and how to solve it?
|
|
|

Without knowing the pertinent parts of Home.js its hard to give some guidance - other than to suggest that JS has restriction on cross-domain scripting. It may work with a local address as that would resolve to LocalIntranet, which may well have relaxed scripting security.

Hello, thanks to hear from some one
actually in Home.js i am reloading a page in a frame.
it works when i works with localhost
but not when i used external ips.
plus if the problem is of cross-domain scripting restriction,
could u tell me how can i remove these restrictions on external ips
Thanks Again for the reply.

Hi,
I am looking for a socail networking application written in asp. I dont want this for making money, just study the code. And I am ready to buy a good sample. I found one, aedating. But this is very much for me and also this is a dating site. They want ~$600 for it. And as you can guess this is an expensive value that I will not use it professionally.
If you have any ideas, please share
Thank you

Seriously mate I wouldn't pay money for the code of a social networking app just to see how it works (unless it was so utterly amazing that Bill Gates had declared forfeit and retired because of it.)
Firstly the social networking industry is still so young that there is no standard or even consensus on what social networking is.
Secondly as Colin points out you won't get much insight over what you would get from any other data driven app.
Maybe you can tell us what you are trying to do and then we can give you some pointers.

All right,
I am only a student, who doesnt interested in e-commerence. Also, I am majoring in Electronical Eng. Then, ASP is a hobby to me. Really. And, coming to what I will do with it... As I said, I love ASP but cannot develop something from zero, or if I do it is not aa complete site. I want that application to use for myself, work on it, use it with my friend.
And, I cannot see any profits here pal.Really
Finally, thats why I am searching for it. social networking is not a industry for me...
This is the story, and if I find the code, I will let you know my domain so you can see...why I am hosting and working on it...
Thanks

Well this thread reminds me that I have been looking for a dating script that I could launch and actually run. But being the cheapster, was hoping for something open source. And maybe an open source product or project would also fit this gentleman's request as well.
I have browsed sourceforge a few times but didn't see quite what I was looking for there. With so much available these days I would be surprised if one had to do one completely from scratch.
Cheers, Chris

Hi,
How does one vertical align the contents of a tag? I don't think the vertical-align attribute work when using it in a style.

I need an explanation about those warning messages that pop up on my pages with javascripts which have only started occuring since SP2 for XP was installed. The one that says, "To help protect your security, Internet Explorer has restricted this file..."
I am sure you have seen this.
So I understand what it is trying to protect and the meaning of the message and how to enable script options in my IE 6 but...
Why is it that the warning pops up on some pages with javascript (yup, like the html pages I wrote myself and copy/pasted in a simple javascript) and some websites I visit which are loaded with a ton of javascripts do not cause the warning message to pop up. And those sites without the message are sites I have not visited before so there isn't a cookie locally (that I am aware of) to tell my browser that the scripts are safe.
I could guess a million reasons why this works or how but I don't know and would really appreciate an explanation. I am interested in learning javascript and perl so I won't just be grabbing the knowledge here without also investing work on my own to better my own knowledgebase.
My biggest concern is I want to prevent this warning message from opening on my self authored pages when viewed by other people on the Internet.
Cheers, Chris

Just a thought.
When your developing javascript's on your local machine (NOT localhost, but just a HTML file and a JScript on your desktop) maybe IE considers this Local Intranet not Internet therefore your script causes as error because local Intranet settings are probably much tighter.
So perhaps if you upload your javascript to localhost or remote server, IE considers it Intranet and is less crazy about security and your script should run fine???
Except popup windows of course...

The errors occur when hosted from the server. I did some messing about and find that often it is caused by flash animations that I downloaded from a template source. I wonder if there is something embedded in them that maybe has the info on the originators domain and that may be telling IE that the source is trying to cross domains which I think is something was a big security risk that they patched earlier this year...
Thanks for the reply.
Oh and when the html page is viewed in the local zone as well as from the server (internet zone), the error happens.
Again I think it is mainly the flash sillyness that I downloaded somewhere. I removed them from the pages giving me errors until I sort them out.
Is there a way to recompile them? What program would I need? I don't own Flash.
Cheers, Chris

I have very little experience with Flash... sorry
I imagine you'd have to decompile change the action script and recompile, like you've suggested doing...however I have no idea as to what program could be used.
If you poke around google for such a thing i'm sure you could find something...or download Flash editor for free 30 day trial...???

Good suggestions (trial, Google). I might try both. Gotta love trial software. Forgot they did that. Yeah it seems like the Flash is the trigger on these. I can easily live without the flash. Might try the recompile anyway just because. You can probably relate with that. Thanks again.

Hey all,
Im trying to call a batch file in ASP but everytime i try it i get an error 'Object Expected'. Here is the code in question:
<%
function myFunction()
set objShell = server.CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
intStatus = objShell.Run("c:\inetpub\wwwroot\Test\some.cmd", 0, true)
end function
%>
Does this look right or have I totally missed/messed something?
|
|
|
|
|
You totally missed something im afraid; server-side functions cannot be called from client side buttons. You must submit a request to the server and then execute your function.
|
|
|
|
|
There are some serious issues with users here not understanding the scope of code execution, variables, and the differences between client side processes and server side processes

I'm writing a simple program in Javascript that dynamically processes Xpaths. So when I read a xml document, I want to display it in a Div with the innerHTML property. To take care the the > and <, I do a string replace. But I was wondering if there is a built in function for doing this type of encoding rather than a search/replace.
Anyone know?
