Password textboxs do this as normal behavior. Why? Because giving the length of the password is a hint to what the password is, or isn't, and even that the account has a password. Password textboxs shouldn't show you anything unless the user types something in it.
If all you're doing is showing the password as a string of "*", then why show it at all?
If your editing the password, then the box should be blank and there should be two boxes, the second box forcing you to type the same password again to avoid typos in the first box.

I can agree with you up to a certain extent.
The part which isnt solved on my side is, if i dont touch the password box, why is the Bound Field being cleared ?
I dont mind too much having nothing shown, but i dont want the old password to disappear. Also, there is another option that can apply which is already in use and accepted, its to display a fixed number of Dots or Stars that isnt related to the current password lenght. This at least can provide the clue that the textbox holds some information.

The solution would probably be to use a custom formattted column in the GridView that just shows "***********" no matter what the value is.
Another idea would be to just not retrieve the password from the database. Instead, use a dummy column to represent the password data and a add a custom formatted column to the Grid that just shows a string of "************" in place of DbNull values.

Your input was really appreciated. I do not agree 100% with the way TextBox handles TextMode=Password but i have to live with it. Having TextMode=Sensitive would have been nice !! lolllllllllllllll

Hi, in order to test my application on some other device I have created a .CAB to pass to some friend… but I have had some difficulty because if the PDA of the friend does not have the runtime installed and tries to install it from my PC, comes given the already present message of version in the system. What's the corrected procedure to execute? Naturally excluding the deploy from VS…

hello!
as we all know, .NET supports localized resources just fine. but when it comes to translation of thousands of strings in all these resource files -- it's pain without good tools that can automate collection of strings in one place for translation, and then distributing translated string back to localized .resx files (possibly creating files for new cultures and adding them to projects to compile).
similar approach is used in SharpDevelop project, but they do not publish the tool's sources, only describe its features and the process of localization. and it's easy to understand, why: this tool is fairly difficult to develop and almost anyone developing commercial software needs it.
and at last, this is my question: anybody knows of any tools (free or not) with similar features?

.Net FrameWork 2.0 provides utility to convert resource files in one shot. That utility is ResGen.exe just go through the help how to use it.

Hey all,
I was wondering if any of you have experience in the ultra explorer bar. I want to know if it is possible to expand a group and collapse another group at the SAME time, because right now it only closes and opens in a sequence. I've played around with the CollapseAll and ExpandAll function and they seem to close and open all group in a sequence.

If the application has been properly architected it should just be a matter of rewriting the presentation (UI) layer - perhaps with the odd addition elsewhere to support a stateless model of working. If it hasn't been well architected then you are looking at rewriting the whole application.

I can add an attribute to each option in a drop-down list, using the System.Web.UI.WebControls.ListBox.Items.Item(ItemIndex).Attributes.Add() method, but they are ignored when the list is rendered to the web-page. How can I render them?
I'm currently adding the controls as childern to a span element, and then using the span.RenderControl(output) method to do the heavy lifting. Is there a method that I can override that specifically renders the options?

I'm getting this error message when trying to request my web application:

What could be the reason and how to solve that?
Notice that I could not root\6afc08f4\6af070d3 folders in 'Temporary ASP.NET Files' folder.
IIS is configured to point to the right directory and first page.

When I have gotten these type of weird errors, I ususally make sure I have stopped and started the web site, I am sure you have already tried that. Stopped and started the app pool. If I am still getting it, I re-copy out the web site and make sure I delete all of the dlls in the bin directory before I copy the site out. Usually after those steps I won't get that error anymore.

I'm writing a Windows Explorer-like clone for myself.
I'm running into a problem where I still get an exception when I try to access empty drives (e.g. the floppy drive), despite having wrapped all the appropriate calls in try...catch blocks.
The odd thing is that this doesn't happen when I build the project. However, if I try to run the executable directly, I get several exceptions. Same thing happens with a release version for the executable.
Another odd thing is that sometimes I'll get 4 exceptions, all for drive A:. Other times, I'll get 2 exceptions, one for A: and one for an empty CD drive.
Any ideas?

Your response got me thinking that I may be looking at this the wrong way.
The window that pops-up is titled ".Net-BroacastEventWindow.1.0.3300.0.1: ExplorerPlus.exe - No Disk."
When I remove the try block, this error pops up before .Net complains about the un-caught exception.
So, I think I need to ask a different question. Thank you for the obvious answer, as it's made me rethink the problem.

I would like to know how to compile an .ico file into a .dll file.
I know about resource files and how to use the assembly linker but I would like to create a .dll file similar to the shell32.dll file which hold standard icons in it.

This would typically be produced using a resource file, the rc.exe tool to produce a .res file from the .rc file, and the C++ linker tool, link.exe.
