This will lock XP pro, it may work on home as well.

I didn't know keyboards needed cleaning! I occasionally have to pry of a keycap to retrieve fragments of chips or breadcrumbs though...

The closest for me would be "When I can no longer make out the letters on the keys" however, since I'm a programmer I don't look at the keys  , I've used them for so long and so often I know their location by heart.
A more sensible answer would be when I can no longer press the keys.

I have this mental picture of sticky, sludgy keys that leave tendrils of goo stuck to your finger when you try to pull away from the keyboard.

Well, i don't actually look and the keyboard while typing so its more important to me that the keys work properly. As long as the keyboard types correctly, it doesn't matter what lies beneath the keys or what kind of stuff get compressed under the keys.

Think more like..... the keys crunch when you press them. Potato chip and cookie crumbs are compressable.....

Nah, mine start to go "crunch-crunch".
I bet there's a good PhD paper in researching the lifestyle of programmers by inspecting the residue of food materials in the keyboard.

What is the best way to clean the keyboard? I've heard everything from vacuum cleaner and dish washer to taking the whole keyboard apart.

I do this with my desktop keyboard. But I can't bang on my laptop, it would not survive it... so I just turn it upside down and vacuum it..
I clean it after I play with my camera and take some shots of the keyboard. The photos (with flash) show me that it is so disgusting and full of trash that I just must clean it

I think it is a good practice to clean keyboard throughly at least once in a week .. And this can be very well at the time when you are bugged with typing and typing the code or anything else

True. Hit (Windows + L) to lock the workstation. Then to tilt the keyboard up and down, hither and thither and to puff air over the keyboard through its various vents and ducts as if they are candles and we are in a birthday party mood.

Whenever you type, or rub some key on your keyboard, you actually clean it.
Why on earth spend (valuable) spare time in doing it?
It's only dirty enough after several years (about the time to get replacements).
Keyboards aren't supposed to be worshipped, they're supposed to be replaced...

let's take an example if person "A" buy a keyboard and take it to home, as it is new brand the person take care of it daily but only for 10 days after that it will be ignored and lot of dust have been stored on the keys
better to keep the room clean

But I have the advantage of ISkin... A siliconbased layer above my notebookkeys... It is washable...
You have to love macbooks hu ?
