As a matter fact, 0, or any combination of x 0's returns the previously not-0 number-text. So 0 probably gets skipped so the stringholder var for the result doesn't get updated. Anyways, it quite a waste of time discussing this since a 5 minute check&change would solve the problem, instead of whining about it here. The only benefit I have doing this, is wasting another 10 minutes of extremely boring work-time! I'm countin' down till 5 dudes, programming ain't that of a thrill all the time (for me) ya know.

In the United States a billion is 1000 million, but not in other parts of the world.
I checked some sites (http://www.iridesnow.com/personal/prime/[^], http://www.askoxford.com/asktheexperts/faq/aboutwords/billion[^]) and they clearly point out that there are two different systems:
- The American system, where 1 billion is 1000 million, 1 trillion is 1000 billion and so on.
- The British system, where 1000 million is a milliard, 1000 milliard is a billion, 1000 billion is a billiard, 1000 billiard is a trillion, and so on.
The British system is also used in many other languages like Dutch, German, ...
Alas, British government seems to be using the American system now (doesn't seem a suprise anymore).
Suggestion:
If you need to report a profit to your boss, use the American system.
If you need to report a loss to your boss, use the British system.
Enjoy life, this is not a rehearsal !!!

So, let me get this straight: If I'm in the States, should I should ask my boss for a raise using the British or American system? And should I tell my wife about the raise using the American or British system?

Even better, never ask your boss for a raise, but ask for stuff your wife can't use, like a new computer, a PDA, a business trip to the bahamas, ...

Hate to burst your bubble, Craig, but you're wrong.
You only use "AND" to represent the DECIMAL point. Grammatically, its is "One Thousand One" for 1001. "One thousand and one tenth" is "1000.1". "One Thousand and One" is grammatically incorrect, although socially acceptable.

Actually you're both right
the number "2001" would be said as "two thousand one" in America, and "two thousand AND one" in the UK (in fact the American way of saying it sounds utterly wrong to someone from the UK)

I think this is probably more of a localisation issue. I'm guessing that we're on different sides of the Pond. I'm in the UK, and "One Thousand and One" is definitely not grammatically incorrect. It may be so in the US, I don't know. So, to make the article more useful to those outside the US, perhaps some localisation would be good.

The "and" and commas are personal preference. You could just easily alter the code to concat if you wanted it to. Their absence doesn't really affect actual performance at all, it's just a cosmetic difference in preferences.
Although I do agree that if you included floating point numbers, you would definitely need the "and" in there since it makes it easier for the human mind to switch gears.
