That said, I pick for a specific purpose as well, and they need to do that purpose and not drive me up a wall in doing so. It was like the first time I was forced to use emacs while in school. "Wait, I have to hit what combination to save? Ctrl+x then Ctrl+s? Or was it Ctrl+W then Ctrl+s? Or was it v? Why can't it just have a menu and a 'Save' function?"
It drove me into the arms of Eclipse and their functional UI. Please note, this was when Eclipse was still a clean quick program. And we were forced to use emacs for the same reason you have to learn the long formulas in mathmatics.

Mom? Is that you? Remember when we went to buy a computer many years ago? The one that you wanted me to buy because it looked so great was an Amiga. They were obsolete at that time and they did not actually sell them anymore. They just had this last one on display to remember the good old times.
So, you call me stupid? Come over and explain that to me personally. Perhaps you will then find out how 'hardcore' I can get. I am aware that there are enough Muggles out there that would pay any price for a box full of electronics junk as long as you put it in a shiny case and tell them that they look great carrying it around. I don't need toys or shiny accessories because I can think of a few far more interesting things.

Indeed? Salt is one of those things we use too much and using it more sparingly actually would be healthy. The primary function of eating still is to stay alive, not to enjoy the great taste. That's just a bonus.

You want functionality and tools that fit well to your needs? Nothing against that. But I don't need all kinds of eye candy or devices with ornamental cases made of precious metals and decorated with diamonds. I don't intend to show off with them and actually rarely look at them at all. Instead I intend to use them and am far more interested in how far the insides of the cases will bring me.

Here's a hard to beat combination (on the software front): Google ingenuity, Apple UX and Microsoft tooling. If I could develop for Android (which sported Apple's look and feel) using Visual Studio, I think I'd have died and gone to heaven.

Yes, I've used Eclipse since 2000. It's come a long way (but was always a good IDE). I also intend to use it when I start hacking Android, as it's the de facto standard for Android development.
