The 36 bit PDP-10 was considered a mainframe.
The 32 bit VAX 8600 was considered a mainframe (the first in the 32 bit series?). There were others in the 32 bit world as well.

Standard machine learning approaches require centralizing the training data on one machine or in a datacenter. And Google has built one of the most secure and robust cloud infrastructures for processing this data to make our services better. Big potential down the road?

Which is the very same, it's just centralized in the Cloud. Machine learning actually without centralized training data has great potential of degenerating to uselessness.

I prefer deterministic algorithms with repeatable results to machine learning, and leave the learning part to the humans designing the algorithms.

"A predefined set of accessible data" is a more appropriate term, so they're pretending to have re-invented the wheel.

OpenAI developed an unsupervised system which learns an excellent representation of sentiment, despite being trained only to predict the next character in the text of Amazon reviews. Hopefully used for good

This is actually astounding. I'm surprised this is one of the few items from today's newsletter without any discussion going on right now.
I think "real" AI is so much closer than the skeptics think it is, with incredible stuff like this continuing to reinforce that position. The "emergent" sentiment recognition capabilities of this model really makes me think about how our brains evolved. Although it still kind of feels like magic (as any sufficiently complex system does), it really shows that it's "not that hard" to create complex emergent behavior when you have a lot of time, data and a large neural network to play with, as mother nature certainly does.
So awesome.
