Apparently, updates after the Creators Update should be quicker.

I haven't had any of my upgrades take that long (SSDs FTW!); but that it doesn't indicate that it's going to be an extra long update (and by collecting the settings info it needs well in advance of kicking the update off actively makes it easy for you to forget) is a cluster-elephant.
OTOH there's a somewhat risky way to abort the upgrade if it comes at a bad time. Power cycle your box. On restart it'll roll back WTE it's done so far. A process that should take about as long as it wasted starting the install. (I discovered this when something glitched on a box using a DP-VGA dongle and a KVM. For some reason while doing the upgrade the dongle didn't work making the system appear bricked. I had the same problem when first installing the AMD GPU driver, so I suspect it's nominally their fault not MS's. I haven't attempted to verify by using the dongle with a box using an NVidia GPU though.)

When we got started here in Summit County Colorado back in 1994, there was still some arcnet and coax ethernet and also a token ring group of true blue gear connected to an AS400 at one of the ski resort reservations systems.
Thank goodness it's all good old CAT 5 and 6 today.
I still have some Ethernet T connectors and terminators at my shop.
I don't know why really.

Years ago I implemented a distributed database, where the main DB was a SQL Server instance and various sites had MS Access copies - which were distributed weekly on floppy, and received updates at week end from sites on floppies.
Replication issues were much more real when hundreds of transactions may have occurred on multiple sites with no means of remote communication.
That was actually my second programming job, and the first I didn't get through a friend's recommendation. I remember at the interview I was told the problem, given a couple of hours to think about it - with a sketch pad and pen (no Internet connection - such things were rare back then), and then asked for an outline of how I may approach the problem.
Apparently, I was the only interviewee who came up with a design they though had any possibility of working successfully.

Any technology stack that enabled the user-generated web had to meet the following requirements: provide a web front-end, store transactional data, produce dynamic web pages and easily manipulate stored data with server-side scripting. All these services need to run on a server operating system. Smack talk about development
