Yes, the ones selling were mainly africans themselves, there were quite a few kingdoms living mainly off slave trade.

Another misconception is that most of the slaves from Africa were taken to the US, but while the number was high (an estimated 12 millions were shipped over the atlantic to all of America) the larger amounts went eastward. Some 17 millions went that direction (still an estimation)
