OK - I certainly go along with the need-to-know being diminished.

That's not what is really in question.   They cannot even be present at meetings (where there advise is presumably sought), there may be new information to which has come out after they were out of their office. If they're to give their opinions they need to be in the room when they're discussed - and perhaps modify their opinions on that basis. Really, by definition, anything that happens after they leave their office is 'new' and falls under the concept of 'need to know'.

It's just not that simple a concept. Eventually, they're usefulness will decrease and they'll be read in on less and less - i.e, as the system now stands. For a while, however, they're quite useful.

Unfortunately - the problem that brings this all up is purely personal (and not even say political). That's not the way to make decisions that effect national security. At least not how I would do it . . . but I didn't even run.
