Printable 2017 Federal Form 1040 (U.S. Individual Income Tax Return)[^] See top of page 2 (item 39a). According to the table (1040 instructions, page 40), the exemptions for a couple over 65 is $15,200. A touch lower than I claimed (mia culpa) - but they're talking more than they're giving. If on Social Security and a small pension, that's going to hurt.

Warren Buffet is a better example, he famously pointed out that his marginal tax rate was lower than his secretary. Regardless, the actual volume of income taxes paid are exactly as I've been characterizing, as they relate to the federal budget, which is what these subsidies are paid from.
You speak as if only the wealthy's money went into the subsidies. It's all one big pot. The money comes from all of us - and the proportionality is way out of proportion is relative terms.

You could argue that the tariff tax (from price increases) is suffered more by the wealthy because they spend more money. The suffering is at the other end - where there's no excess income and the increases in costs come right out of the pantry.

A century or so, ago, France solved this attitude (by/for the rich) with the help of Mdm Guillotine.

So, once again, how do subsidies to dairy farmers constitute a tax on the poor?
It's kind of obvious. They pay more for their dairy (just like the rich) but they pay a much larger proportion of their income on this purchase. Hence, the tax burden is shifted to them.
