Ads are one thing; it's the targeting that's unacceptable, because of the huge invasion of privacy.
And I've yet to see figures (that are not from google) that say targeted ads produce more revenue than non-targeted ads, so it may well be that all google and facebook are doing, by collecting all this personal data, is painting targets for hackers.
... And, of course, making shiploads of money for absolutely nothing.

From article: So why is Valve ditching the most popular Linux desktop OS? Canonical, the company that owns and develops Ubuntu, said last week that Ubuntu 19.10 will not include any 32-bit packages. That means applications that rely on any 32-bit libraries or drivers won't work, which includes a large amount of games on Steam. The actual Linux kernel still supports 32-bit software, but requires OS distributors like Ubuntu to develop and test the 32-bit components.
In response to the backlash, Canonical released a statement this morning that it would continue to update "selected 32-bit i386 packages for Ubuntu 19.10 and 20.04 LTS," and that it would work with the gaming community on long-term solutions. In the meantime, Valve is still looking for another Linux desktop to call its home.

Running 32bit in a VM instead of natively doesn't address why Canonical wanted to drop support; that usage of the libs is low enough that they no longer have enough passive eyes on them to maintain confidence that nothing has broken with updated and that vulnerability checking is still going at full speed.

No, I was talking about Canonicl caving to the open-mouth breathers worried about 32-buit installers for steam.They could simply fire up a 32-bit vm, install their crap on steam, and then run steam from the host os to play their silly (outdated) games.

I'm still firmly in the camp that thinks Valve should have released a 64 bit client years ago. It's annoying to have to install a few gigabytes of 32bit compatibility libraries just to install a bunch of 64bit games.
What's really awkward is that most games on Steam that support Linux only officially support Ubuntu.

I'll second this sentiment; but they'd probably still want to keep 32bit support as a requirement for ports of retrogames.

If you heard it on the radio you don't know that dropbox wants to become an OS; all you know is that some idiot who probably thinks "The Internet" is what the Big Blue E on his computer is called thought that dropbox wanted to be an OS. Which shouldn't so much be taken with a grain of salt as with all the rocksalt the northern half of the US stockpiles each winter because it's coming out of the mouth of someone who probably wouldn't know what an OS was if it deleted all his data (which he has storing in the trash can because he thought it looked a little bit like a filing cabinet).
