So there I was, 11 years old. Some of the older guys from the high school and some older than that that I very loosly knew came up to me at the picnic table I was sitting on by myself in the park by my school. They had guitars. They knew I could play a little so they said "Hey Ron, were doing the talent show in the auditorium tonight and we need another guitar player. Ever heard of Locomotive Breath by Jethro Tull.
Whiskey Tango Fox.... No. Jethro..... what?
Oh it's easy, here. And handed me a guitar. they crash coarsed me in 10 minutes and figured I'd do so in we went. I was too much of a nerd to set foot in a school sponsered anything. but we filed in and it was dark with a spot light in a circle of chairs. They pointed me to one and said 1,2,3 and I started in ya know do, na, na, na, not not chuka chucka chuka chuck. And then they all joined in.
We killed it.
Most fun scared shitless time I ever had.

I'm hearing conflicting reports from various sources...
- Front loading washing machines clean clothes better.
- Top-loading washing machines clean better
- They clean the same, but the [top/front] loading machines wear out your clothes faster than the [front/top] loaders because of [Reason X, Y, Z]
- The agitator in the old style of washing machines was the problem, and the new style with impellers has fixed all of that
Is the guy in the appliance store telling me what he simply wants me to think ?
Or for that matter, is there any real difference in the first place ?

AFAIK, front loaders replaced top loaders completely in the UK about thirty or fourty years ago - probably because they fit under worktops, so they free up space for cupboards or a dryer on top of them. I remember my mother had a top loader when I was a kid, but I've never seen one for sale.
All I know is "don't mix whites with colours unless you have a sudden yearning for pink shirts".

We've picked the top loader with an impeller for our last two washers. It's easier to load bedding stuff.

Front loading machines get moldy around the door and start to stink. It requires real discipline to prevent this, and we would never have one again given a choice (we're renting and a moldy front loader came with the house).
A top loader also makes it easy to throw a forgotten item into the washer while it's running.

Two things to fix that:
1) Don't close the door fully right away - let the machine air out so it's dry before you close the door. Damp air is a breeding ground for fungi and molds.
2) Don't wash everything at a low temperature - I do one bi-monthly load at 60C or 90C to kill fungi. It's also worth running a pack of Dr. Beckmann Service-IT Washing Machine Cleaner[^] once a year or so. Our front loader is what? Ten? Fifteen years old? And it smells fine.
