number. Actually, it was originally written in MSDN to retrieve the name of the OS. I modified it for the purpose of retrieving hard disk serial number. It does retrieve a serial number, but the question is: how am I sure this is actually the serial number of the hard disk and not the serial number of the CD/DVD drive or perhaps a removable USB media.
If what it retrieves is actually the serial number of the hard disk, how can I modify it to give me the serial number of the other mentioned media above?

If the code works as expected - then the query seems right. SerialNumber is the manufacturer-allocated number used to identify the physical media. Example: WD-WM3493798728

Why are you calling CoSetProxyBlanket when you have full control over CoInitializeSecurity?

The MediaType property allows you to check that you are getting the serial number of a harddisk (29)
