Robot pattern recognition

I have a mini robot that follows a white path by using light sensors. I want to remove the sensors and instead use a camera strategically positioned to view the path ahead.
Does any one have an idea as to how I can use the camera to identify the path to follow (including sharp and smooth corners) ?

Competition is competition. Yes, the problem is challenging; and the idea is interesting. However, why anyone should get any advantage over others even through guidance? It would be completely different story if it was learning and normal school project.

Its not really a competition but more of a challenge I hoped to overcome.
I've read some stuff on pattern recognition but none helps me as much as i'd need.
