Cant I copy this file from another computer that also has the same SQL installed onto this machine and then get it to work somehow?

Too bad you are missing this file. You might have removed it by some mistake. I think the file must be named like *.MSI. This is the installation file used to uninstall the software product as well. Missing this file makes correct uninstallation difficult and can cause some contamination of the system Registry with erroneous or redundant entries, which is not good.

Sometimes I face the situations like that, when correct uninstallation of the project becomes impossible. Usually it happens due to some mistake in installation package of the product.

Here is what I do. (I used to try to clean up Registry manually, but this is not a reliable way.) First, I manually remove all files copied by installation and all data files related to the program which are usually in the "Users" or "Documents and Settings" directory. Sometimes, this is hard to do because some processes should be killed to allow deletion of files, possible some services must be stopped. To avoid adverse effects of killing to many processes, reboot of the OS after deletion is sometimes required. When this is done, I use some good Registry Cleaner to clean the system Registry automatically. Please see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Registry_cleaner[^].

Warning! Do this with great care.
